I have a 91 fbd that I'm trying to lighten up and was wondering if they make a hatch like this.
BTW i plan on getting lexan for the hatch too and just putting some of that clear protective tape for windshields on it to prevent scuff marks and scratches.

Tha makes no sense, the very little part of the hatch that is metal, would be just as light as re-enforced FG to rpelce it, the glass is where all the weight is.Originally Posted by zact1024

Yup, this. There isn't much metal to begin with so you won't see much if any weight saving. That and I, personally, wouldn't be able to trust that small amount of fiberglass not breaking. 85% glass, 15% metal panel.Originally Posted by Gumby

The 4th gen hatches are fiberglass, but there is a lot more to them than the 3rd gens, and the extra fiberglass around the glass makes them fairly structurally sound.

I'd try taking weight off of the front before taking it off of the back.

I dont see why it doesnt make sense, I need a hatch anyways and I figured sq/in for sq/in fiberglass was lighter than metal...and whether it was a pound or five pounds different i didnt care was just curious
guys FWIW, the metal part on the hatch is quite heavy. Ever take a hatch apart? you would be surprised how much it weighs. But, making a fiberglass replacement, and all the BS associated with mounting it and keeping it functiona is really not worth the time. The are better places to remove weight.
