Headlight door won't open

Hello,

just picked up my 1990 GTA and the passenger headlight door won't open. I can hear the motor running but the door isn't even trying to open. I have the replacement gears but wondering how to change them.

Thanks

Re: Headlight door won't open

Check out TDS, there you will find a kit to repair your headlight motors.

Re: Headlight door won't open

Here is what I was unable to write last night which would have explained the problem.

The motors turn a shaft that turn three little rubber cylinders that spin and turn a larger gear. After time the little cylinders disintegrate. When you take apart the Headlight gearbox you will find it full of little rubber crumbs. you dump the crumbs and you install the delren pieces you buy from TDS... It should fix it, I think he also has gears.

Its a whole lot cheaper than buying new motors.

its sounds exactly like what you need.

Re: Headlight door won't open

I took it apart and changed the large gear but I haven't found where the 3 little cylinders go. They came with the large gear in the kit that I bought. After replacing the large gear the motor will turn properly but seems to run on for about 3 times as long as the driver's side motor. It will try and lift the headlight but just seems to slip.

I don't understand for the life of me why it runs on. Do the motors have a shut off when the arm on the linkage hits the stop and that kills the power? Somebody please help me out here. I am getting really close to just buying a new unit and putting it in but I have throwing money at my car for parts that don't make it faster/tighter.

Re: Headlight door won't open

Its been a few years since I messed with one, I would contact Lon at TDS and he should be able to help you better.

I remember the little round things went in there, I actually made my own on a lathe, and 1.5 hours of messing around, but for the money it would have saved me to buy from Lon I wish I would have done just that... My Large gear was fine tho IIRC.

i want to think the little wheel things are internal... Now that I think about that comment, that really did not help.

Like I said, Contact lon. (626) 369-0400
