85-89 ground effects removal
I found a set of ground effects at the local salvage yard here and can not seem to find how to access the top rear bolts on the rocker piece of the ground effects. I would have thought under the plastics next to the rear seat bottom cushion but did not find any acess holes. Did I miss them or are they reached in a different manner? I also remember hearing something about a metal peice of the ground effects tack or spot welded in place. Is this the metal backing behind the door pieces? If so how would I remove it at the salvage yard? The door panels are off the rear seat bottoms are out and most plastics are removed. The Trans Am fender vents are gone so the front top bolts on the rocker pieces are fairly easy. I am going to get them on Saturday the 18th. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know about TA's, but my Camaro just had plastic clips there, no bolts. It was a while ago that when I removed them, don't remember how they work though. I think you might just have to remove all the other fasteners holding the gfx piece on, then slide it towards the rear of the car. Or slide it in some direction.

The rear of the rocker moulding is held on with 1 or 2 nuts on studs that come thru from the outside, much like the front. I've reached them thru the air vent in the door opening.
The door piece has nuts inside the door. The welded on piece is inside the rocker moulding. You'll see it when you get them off.

There should be a hole covered with tar (rubber, whatever it is!) just under the front side of the armrest support. Its a 7/16" emblem nut and you will need a 4" extension to get it out easily. IIRC theres 2 screws under the emblem at the front of the skirt, like 7 7mm srews under the skirt and 5 screws on the top and the previously mentioned nut. The door piece is pretty straight forward, just don't forget the wierd nuts at the bottom of the door. Sorry if i stepped on any feet, I'm bored and felt like typing lol (for once!).

Does the stud on the rear of the ground effects ggo through the body into the enterior, i've looked everywhere for that and can't find it. Is the only way to access it through the vent hole in the door opening cause I don't think my arm will fit in there. What size nut is on it.

You will need a 7/16" socket to take the nut off. Its tricky to see if you don't know what your looking for. Remove the seat and the plastic panel with the arm rest, You cant miss the hole under the armrest support, it may be sealed off with rubber, just poke through it and you will gain access to the nut. Look in there and you will see it, its down a ways, geb a flashlight if you need to. Don't get crazy when you take the skirt off because that stud may break off, it's hard to do but I bet it can happen.

Thanks to all who responded. I believe I seen the covered hole when I glanced at it while getting the split seat backs. I also now know much more of what I need to bring for tools for this. If time prevails then I will get some other parts while I am there Sat. also.

I seem to have some real stubborn screws that hold my ground effects, the don't want to turn, I've probably stripped most of them, I'm guessing I'm gonna have to drill them out.

Re: 85-89 ground effects removal
I had no problems with anything except for the door pieces. On those it seemed that they wanted to strip the stud out of the plastic. I have studs so I am going to repair those.
Of course I do not live where rust is a big concern either.

Well you're lucky. I thought it was all going smooth, got my first doors ground effects off, then tri.ed the other door, no luck, and as for the rear ground effects below the quarter panels, I can't even seem to drill those screws out! Im too worried that I might damage the plastic piece, and don't want to have to replece them.

It seems as though you may want to try an impact driver on those bottom screws. Also spray with a good penetrating oil.
