Removing weatherstrip adhesive

I must say, now that I've pulled the t-top weatherstripping off, my roof is pretty darn clean and rust free for a car that's sat outside for a long time, especially when it was down in Alabama. Guess I got to it in time. Would have thought that the roof would be a little more rusty, but it's the center bar that has all the rust .

Unfortunately, the weatherstrips came off in chunks, and there are still chunks left on the roof. Not to mention a lot of the adhesive. What's a good thing to use to get the adhesive off of all of the tracks and such? Scraping is difficult in the smaller tracks, and a screwdriver isn't doing the job in places.

Use some full strength laquer thinner to take off the left on pieces and glue. Soak a rag good with the thinner plus some elbow grease will take it all off.

I can do that on the removable tracks, but I'd rather not rub the paint off up there, seeing as how it's pretty cherry.

here is how mine looked, then I bought on of these drill power sanding things from pepboys. Will remove it all very fast took me about 20 minutes to do all of mine ... cover interior though because will make a mess.

Yeah, I have to go back to Harbor Freight and get some more of those abrasive pads. Cover my interior? What interior? The only non-body parts left attached to the frame of my car right now are the front suspension, engine, and transmission... Everything else is outta dodge right now. I have more of my car in my garage than in my driveway right now.

then dont worry about the interior lol .... like I said it will get messy but will get you down to a nice surface to start over real fast, it didn't seem to be able to damage any of my strip channels either and after the new weatherstrips slipped in place with ease.

good luck

Re: Removing weatherstrip adhesive

Thanks. I'm going to need all the luck I can get... Seems like the roof and the driver's side quarter are the only pieces of metal on the car right now that don't have any rust . Which is why I'm probably going to wait until next spring to get the adhesive and stuff off so that I have the paint, sealant, adhesive, and weatherstrip to put on there ASAP so I don't end up with a problem.
