Inner Wheel Well to Quarter Panel Bond

For anyone that has done a quarter panel on their third gen, how do you seperate the inner wheel well from the quarter panel?

Also, has anyone worked with a quarter skin that actually fits properly? If so, what brand do you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Inner Wheel Well to Quarter Panel Bond

It depends on if you are saving the 1/4 panel or replacing it. If you are replacing the outer panel you can take a small grinder and grind into all the spotwelds around the wheel opening enough to weaken the 1/4 panel metal and then chisel them apart. You don't want to grind into the wheelhouse metal just the outer skin. That leaves the wheelhouse with a clean edge to weld to when you replace it. It also helps to cut the outer panel an inch or so away from the wheel arch all the way around and get the big part of the panel out of the way. Then you can chisel down between the two panels, to the lip, from the top. If you've ground enough strength out of the welds they come apart pretty easy. Usually there is some sealer down in there too. When it comes time to put the new panel on, Panel bonding adhesive is a good way to do the area around the wheel arch. It bonds and seals and doesn't require welding in that difficult area.
If you're trying to save the outer panel then it's a whole different ball game.
