The hood supports never last anyways. I've only had my new ones on for a year and they already drop down halfway. Total waste of money.

Got mine at Pepboys- 5 minutes to change them out (on the hood) and good as new, so far... cheap as, too!

Re: Hood Support/Trunk Supports Needed Please Help

I bought mine at O'Reilly's ten years ago, they still work and have a lifetime warranty!
The hood lifts are getting a little weak but they still work. I would have to dig through some receipts for the price. New ones are great. My Bird came with a blue broomstick handle! I still have it after 16 years!

Hello travisgold!!

You might find it easier, and cheaper to buy them at your local Cajun Tire!!

Check out the price there, and then give 1ADan above a shot to meet or beat the price to your door!!

My "E (online) bay" experience has been a bit of a steep learning curve, it may seem cheap, but once you get hosed for the shipping/customs/brokerage fees/taxes, it turns out that it's usually cheaper to get it locally!!

A real cheap fix is the old vice grip trick!!

Hello '87IROCZOWNER69!!

The vice grip trick is where you lift up your hood or hatch, and clamp a vice grip to the support strut's piston rod (the chrome part), this will prevent the hood or hatch from closing!!

Talk about a "Red Neck" fix! A broomstick would work better.

FYI, I'm pretty sure I saw a recent thread here about hatch supports in which someone wrote that whether or not a spoiler and/or wiper motor was present should be a factor when purchasing. If I recall, it had something to do with lift speed and broken glass. Sound familiar to anyone?

Post 12 was the one I remembered and someone else mentioned having a spoiler being a factor in # 7. I've never had to change struts I'm just putting it out there for the OP.

The guy who posted that has a Firebird. A lot of our cars came with the ridiculously heavy rubber wrap-around spoiler you can see in my sig, in which case they would need stronger hatch struts to hold it up. Most likely, they had two different models, because then you would end up with a situation like the one below if they used the same hatch struts for rubber spoiler and smaller spoiler cars:

I got lucky a local guy has the hatch and I go get it tomorrow, Then I need to find struts for it that dont slam it open. Yes I had the ones for the application but they were just to strong. They were and are brand new from AM auto parts

Re: Hood Support/Trunk Supports Needed Please Help

I bought a set of “Stabilus” brand hood lift/struts about a year ago at O'Reillys Auto Parts for $15.99 each. They state on the package that they are OEM and they came with a limited lifetime warranty ,so I asked O'Reillys exactly what that means. I was told if they ever quit working to bring them in with receipt or they keep them/you in the computer in case you loose the receipt for a new set. They went on real easy and lift and hold my Goodmark Steel Cowl Hood very nicely.I don't see any reason why you could not find these at any auto parts store. I will see just how long they really last but at this point I'm happy with this purchase
Here's a link to the lifts at O'Reillys = http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...aro&vi=1035694

I guess I'm lucking then I think mine are original to the car. I know I've never replaced them in the 10 years I've had it. Also the dash-pad has never been replaced and it is still crack free.

Re: Hood Support/Trunk Supports Needed Please Help

while you can get hood/hatch shocks.......they all sag after a while..gm hoods and that monster hatch heavy.....
go to local auto parts store get hood shock prop.
it ataches to shock and hold hood or hatch up easy to use{like a vise grip but wont damage shock piston}

other idea is folding prop like on the fiero and some vettes

Re: Hood Support/Trunk Supports Needed Please Help

The hood and hatch struts are a big waste of money and I got screwed over last time I replaced them, the guy gave me ones for a fibreglass hood.... and mine was steel, they did it 2 times in a row! Anyways I don't have a third gen anymore, I sold my first one and it was a huge mistake then I picked up a red 86 t/a ws6 with a swapped in 350 GMC Van motor! It was loaded with problems... Also loaded with all options!

^ just buy the right ones. Its nice to have a vehicle that works.

Ebay has em for about 40$ a set. They are a lot cheaper than what they used to be.

On warm days my hatch lifts up all the way on its own.

Re: Hood Support/Trunk Supports Needed Please Help

I was in a accident in my 97 firebird and took out the back window with a trailer hitch, so I just got a new hatch from a guy on kijijij since it would of been way to pricey to replace the glass on the current hatch, and when I replaced the hatch the struts decided to go. I don't know if the 94 hatches are heavier then the 97 but they went the day after I replaced the hatch.
