pretty sure running without a hood is illegal. I could be wrong tho.

I dont really see a problem with running no filter at the track since just about everyone does it. then again the motor only runs for 30 sec or so. on the street i would always run a filter.

Re: need help finding a hood for my firebird to fit my BBF!

Update, i got 1 of 2 summit packages today... fedex still hasnt delivered the drop base air cleaner (UGH i hate fedex! suppose to be delivered today and its 8pm and nothing!) and thats the only thing im missing. I got the edelbrock air cleaner and threw it on the motor for ***** and giggles... hahaha it looks retarded! i wont post a pic unless asked. It does however stick up even higher than the other air cleaner.... bummer. but it is a smaller filter and it it was lower by like 1" or so it would work.

waiting on the 2" dropped air cleaner, and i should be getting the 2"x14" round filter and filter top tommarrow for mock up.

Im not sure about legality. I know most roadsters are hoodless.

Re: need help finding a hood for my firebird to fit my BBF!

haha well i didnt get the dropped air cleaner, wanna know why?

Fedex said part was on vehicle for delivery so i waited, they never showed and finnally at 7am it posted that there was a security issue so the package couldnt be delivered. I called summit, then fedex, the fedex hub is in avenel NJ. The woman i spoke to then said the unbelievable.... the reason there was a security issue is that THE FEDEX TRUCK WAS SOLEN! haha the whole figin truck with everything on it!!! u gotta be kidding me.

called summit to file a claim, they laughed on the phone with me and sent out a replacement air cleaner with 1 day shipping, it arrived yesterday but wont be able to open/look at it till maybe tmrw (sunday).

haha i just think its hilarious, i did get the 2" filter and filtertop. filtertop is different than i thought, its not raised at all and is completely flat so i might have to get a 3" filter now due to the drop of the aircleaner (2" drop and 2" filter wont allow enough room for the vent tubes on the carb). have to find out tmrw

Yeah, custom is always fun. That car is gonna be so cool though. As far as legality goes, DEQ may have an issue with 521CID in a 3rd gen. LOL.

very true. Im hoping that when my inspection is up that the car will be a classic (25 years) and then i can just skip the inspections lol.

Re: need help finding a hood for my firebird to fit my BBF!

Also just an update... the 2" AFCO air cleaner i recieved is not really a 2" drop air cleaner!! GOD DA@MN IT! its actually less of a drop than the stephs fabrication air cleaner that i was using originally.

I might have found a solution tho, using a 2" filter and the drop air cleaner i was able to get the height that i want, however that is with a 2" round high flow oiled air filter. I also got a high flow filter top to use with it but it the drop air cleaners center (inside) bulge sits higher than the top of the 2" filter, then the carb vent tubes push the filter top about 1" above the 2" filter. So the filtertop is basically useless.

Im worried about the 2" filter not flowing enough for the 521... as i did the calculations and the 521 requires a 3.5" filter minimum. However spectre rates there 9"x2" filter for 600hp and 880CFM http://www.jegs.com/i/Spectre/865/88...oductId=924092

Re: need help finding a hood for my firebird to fit my BBF!

some pics with the afco air cleaner and the 2" filter. It looks small i know... not sure if its going to be enough filter. U can also see the height of the filter and the carb vent tubes where it makes the filter top impossible.

Im hoping that i can cut 1/4" off the base of the air cleaner so i can increase the drop 1/4" more. then see if i can find a cheap red oiled 2.5" filter for some increased filter CFM to feed this beast.

any ideas?

I still vote custom hood. Couldn't be that hard to modify a fiberglass hood. As long as your alot better with fiberglass than I am. LOL

Re: need help finding a hood for my firebird to fit my BBF!

So I finnally found a true 2" drop pun aluminum air cleaner... its from hpr... which is a racing company. Ill post the site in a later post as im on my mobile device now. The air cleaner is much thicker than the stephs and afco air cleaners. But I have a small issue... with the 2" drop the base of the air cleaner contacts the needle screws on the front and rear fuel bowls just enough to make the base rock back and forth and not seat all the way down on the carb. I can either raise the cleaner slightly with this nifty little bullet spacer and seal (pics later) and it will raise the base about 1/4" . Or I could dent the base of the air cleaner to clear the fuel bowl needle screw.

Now with the 2"drop base with a 3" k&n filter the front of the air cleaner is 3" above the fender line and raises up to about 3.75" above the fender line 3" farther back from front of the air cleaner due to the bulge in the top of the cleaner.
