Leave them off. It's very hard to sand and buff without ruining the decals. Looks great!

Re: 87 Turbo Iroc - black paint job progress pics

Still too early to say. It actually does look pretty good even without the wetsanding and polishing. Once all of the parts went on the overall package looks great. I really wish I could go ahead and put on the stickers.

Just for some fun I did this tonight though

Nothing like 67 cent stickers on a 4k paint job haha

Re: 87 Turbo Iroc - black paint job progress pics

Thanks bud.. I hope this gatlinburg hard water didn't trash it too much.. good thing I still gotta sand it. I forgot my car cover and you should see it now! Birds spent a lot of time on the trees over it I guess!

My new favorite pic of the paint job:

Re: 87 Turbo Iroc - black paint job progress pics

Superb thread, well done!

My car's similar to yours, black '87 IROC-Z. But I've no decals since it was resprayed by a previous owner.

Can you tell me what color decals you're going to use, which ones (are there stripes?) and where you're getting them?

I'd love to see a pic if you've put your decals on now.

Thanks

Andy

Re: 87 Turbo Iroc - black paint job progress pics

I ordered the decals from Phoenix Graphics. They were pricey at $199 but when I got them I realized why. They seem very high quality and the IROC stickers come on a large sheet with guides to properly line them up just like the oem's did. My car had silver badging and stripes so that's what I went with. The stripe will be two-tone just like factory. Will be a few weeks before they go on (at least) because I have to do all of the wetsanding still.

Whoever did the first repaint on my car simply used a 1/4" silver pinstripe. It wasn't correct but it did work I suppose. Sure was difficult to remove what was left of it too.

Re: 87 Turbo Iroc - black paint job progress pics

Finally put it in a small local show.. not judging just a showing thing they do here on the weekends. Didnt have time to get the stickers on still. Also forgot to throw the latch cover back on and keep forgetting to put the distributor cover back on. Still, nice to see it parked next to some other nice cars..

Finally a "completed" engine bay photo with the car done as well

I think I'm going to go ahead and do the stickers this week. I'll just have to tape them off when i wetsand and polish. I know its not ideal, but it will take me weeks to months to finish that and I'll be missing car shows every weekend.

Re: 87 Turbo Iroc - black paint job progress pics

I couldn't wait on the stickers. At this rate I won't have the car sanded and polished before summer and it just doesn't look right without the stickers. The final straw was when someone at the car show asked my wife if it was an "Iroc".. so today they went on.

These are Phoenix stickers, the $199 kit. So if you're wondering what they look like going on, here you go..

They are marked for location and labeled. Basically the stripes sit on top of the ground effect edge.

The Iroc stickers have an alignment mark for the front edge of the door. Vertical alignment is simple, just sit them on top of the lower stripe.

Re: 87 Turbo Iroc - black paint job progress pics

Can't wait to see the finished job, decals on.

I see the Phoenix decals are black and something, I guess the black parts aren't visible on a black car?

How does that look?

I guess mine should have silver decals too, as the small ones just behind the front wheels are silver.

Andy.

Re: 87 Turbo Iroc - black paint job progress pics

Ooops I thought I had already posted the final decal pics. The decals are black on the bottom, but this the way it was done at the factory too on black cars. I didn't know for sure because the previous painter of my car used a simple 1/4" pin stripe around the bottom. I always thought the black cars would have had a two-tone silver stripe. Well in bright daylight it does stand out, but at night it looks like a single silver stripe. Anyway, some pics!

Re: 87 Turbo Iroc - black paint job progress pics

I recently installed the fog lights and fog light trim/front tag mount. It looks 1000x better with that in than a big opening for the intercooler. I think once I get the new engine finished I won't have the cooling problems I was having with these in place. Anyway, yesterday I put it in a small car show (35 cars, 15 trophies) where I did not place (but several 2006-2011 Dodge Chargers/Daytonas did) but at least it looked good losing.. and the only other turbo cars were two Hondas.

Damn thats a good looking car... I wish I had the money to do my GTA like that.. And that car show sounds like the judges were on something. The 4 door dodge charger is UGLY as ****. The new restyled ones are even uglier. I mean think they are just foul looking, I would much rather have your IROC.
