Fenders and Antenna Motor replacement?
Fenders and Antenna Motor replacement?
Hey guys, the title sums it up pretty well. My current antenna on my 91 GTA is stuck up. I'm pretty sure the motor is bad. However, I suppose technically that it could be unhooked or something. Is there any good way to check this out. If I do decide to replace the motor the fender has to come off doesn't it? Thanks.

Just remove the inner fender, the plastic piece between the wheel house and the outer panel. The antenna will be right there behind it. Undo the antenna assembly from the bracket and pull it down and out of the fender grommet.
Check the antenna relay behind the pass side dash panel by your knees... Could be unhooked due to having a bad antenna mast cable (it's run on a nylon cable that gets chewed up or breaks over time) or bad gears in the motor itself that keeps the motor running in one direction.
Not sure if yours is rebuildable or not if it's busted... The one on my 93 Grand Prix wasn't, and I got one out of a late-80's Regal that was and replaced it. Took a while to get it right, but that antenna was working when I sold the car. Anyways, the housing may be assembled with plastic pins that the factory melted in a way to permanently seal the halves of the gear case together. The one that's screwed together is easier to work with.

Re: Fenders and Antenna Motor replacement?
Sounds like the antenna nylon broke and the previous owner disconnected the relay. I have heard of people working on tis and not doing it the right way so I will advise to do it correctly and it's a lot easier. The manual states that you need to remove the stereo and disconnect the antenna from the radio. Fish the wires out and you will be able to pull the entire assembly thru the fender grommet.
The motor assembly might be the riveted type. Just drill out the rivets and when you put it back together, use small nut/bolts to hold the housing together. It's not hard to fix, but it does take some time if done correctly.
