T-Top switch issue..
Keeping this short and to the point.
I resently bought a 88 z28 with GLASS T-tops.. the T-tops did NOT leak on the 88 camaro.
I have a 92 RS camaro with Lexan t-tops, once again no leaks (did the leak test with water hose and no headliners to watch for leaks)
I wanted to put my 88s glass t-tops on my 92, the bolt sliders that hold the t-tops in fit without any real issues (one bar was bent slightly and i fixed that)
Stuck 1 glass t-top off my 88 onto my 92rs.. and visa versa. Ran water on top the 88z28 and had no leaks, witch i wasnt worried about as the 88 is going into my barn for a complete tare down and rebuild.
BUT when I ran water over the top of the 92 RS (witch had 1 glass t-top off the 88z28 on it) the water ran down after a few seconds... it didnt leak around the outside but it leaked on the inside there the T part is. I adjusted the t tops a TON of times trying to get a REAL tight seal.. even had the tops so tight it was hard to move the leaver to take the tops off..
IT STILL leaked, at the same places.. the front and back of the glass t top. After soaking my drivers seat and my arm rest and shifter i quit and desided to ask a few questons..
The LEXAN tops have a small metal strip around the sides, all 3 sides where they touch the body.. The glass ones dont, they feel like there is a 1/16th of an inch lose on the seal on the T-bar where they slide under. Could that be the issue thats causeing the water to leak in?
After 10 minits of work i refit my lexan t top and had once again.. NO leaks. (except where theres a crack in the center of the top thus is why i need them replaced)
Can anyone help me out on this issue? I can also post photos of the top on the car, and the tops by themself.
(sorry this is the only pic of the 92s t-tops i have, this was while doing my motor swap)
Notice the metal strips on the outside, it has them on all 3 corners of the top

Now here is my 88z28s t-tops
Notice there is no metal strips on the glass ones vs the lexan ones

Thanks guys n gals, hopefully someone can help as im tired of haveing a wet butt dew to a crack in my lexan t top (right in the middle very small put it leaked.. super glued it for a temp fix)

Re: T-Top switch issue..
I suppose it's possible that the plastic tops with the metal strip have 'settled' the weatherstripping seal where the metal strip is - and since the glass tops don't have them, they aren't sealing the same. It's all I can come up with for a thought.
I had no issues swapping from plastic to glass myself, but I know what you mean about the metal strips.
Maybe try a test using the glass top with a thin piece of plastic down those edges, just to see. If it stops the leaking, then maybe you could fab a permanent fix like this, and super glue it to the glass top edges on the underside.
