Hood insulation?

I don't really know the name of this thing under the hood, but it's falling apart and I fear it'd get chopped up by the alternator when it spins. It's ripping apart and the plastic pieces holding it in place are of no use since they ripped off- somehow

Any ideas on how I can reattach it?

and should I also worry about asbestos from it o.0

Re: Hood insulation?

You can just pull it all off. I have on every one of my 3rd gens (steel or fiberglass hood) and never had a paint problem.

If you want to keep it & need new pins:

Re: Hood insulation?

The pins are still intact, but the liner itself has ripped away from it.

I'm getting paranoid on the asbestos issue...

Re: Hood insulation?

I pulled my last one off bare handed, no problems. You can put on a pair of gloves & a long sleeve shirt if want to take extra precautions. Maybe throw on a dust mask since yours is falling apart so badly.

Re: Hood insulation?

The hood won't look too pretty without it...as you can see. I think it's less effort to just keep it on the hood.

Guess I'd rather keep it on, idk how to put it back together though...suggestions?

Re: Hood insulation?

the hood insulation question comes up often . it was not installed for heat protection . it was installed to muffle engine noise . i don't know about you , but if i have a strange engine noise . i want to know about it right away . then i can fix it before it becomes a major problem . i have removed it on all my 3rd gens. . just my thoughts . good luck .

Re: Hood insulation?

I debated buying the universal sheet, cutting pieces and fitting them into the various triangles, to it doesn't quite hang down as intended, but still mostly in there...

Re: Hood insulation?

These liners are readily available on ebay. I bought one new for about 20 bucks. Best investment in under the hood appearance in my opinion.

Re: Hood insulation?

Its a fire blanket in case of engine fire. No asbestos. Use auto interior trim removal tool to remove plastic clips. You will destroy plastic clips (they are reusable if not broken, but they will be old and brittle and will break) when removing. They are available new for cheap at auto parts stores. Buy new one and replace if you like safety over appearence, remove it if you like appearence over safety.
