Just got backed into...have some ?'s
Just got backed into...have some ?'s
So our wonderful neighbor across the street decided to back into our 89 RS today.
It was a very low speed hit as she was only backing out. The back corner of her bumper got the drivers side door SQUARELY in the center and popped the window into millions of pieces all over. It also cracked the windshield.
I have driven it around the block and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. Just have no window now. I have vac'd it out with a driven **** hostility to glass like no one has seen before. It's at least clean and safe inside.
Their insurance adjuster is supposed to come out tomorrow and do the work up on it. I'd like to have some knowledge in advance as to guesses from you pro's as to how much the repair is going to be for a new door, window, windshield? Is there any chance it's going to cost more to have it fixed than it's worth and then have to worry about a total?
Any input is greatly appreciated. Yes we took pictures, yes we exchanged information. It is my understanding that it falls into the category of "damaged vehicle" and not an "accident" on our part so no DMV report necessary on our end. I do intend to call my insurance agent in the morning to let him know whats going on.
Thanks in advance for the advice fellas (and gals

Re: Just got backed into...have some ?'s
since most insurance companies consider these cars worthless, they are probably going to try and total it.
how did they break the windsheild? must have hit it pretty hard.
the repair should be pretty simple as far as work goes swap the door and panels, new glass, and paint$$$. But like i said, it may be enough cost to total it.

Re: Just got backed into...have some ?'s
it just caused a hairline crack to start from the driver side. I could care less about that...only worried about getting the door replaced and willing to do it myself.

you could get a new door from craigslist ad or go to car-part.com.that is where bodyshops look for used parts.
Re: Just got backed into...have some ?'s
Whoever is sending me some luck I'm REALLY appreciating it. Just did a local CL search and found the following!!
2-doors with glass - $50.00 each
2-front fenders - $25.00 each
rear hatchback with glass - $100.00
front clip with brakes, steering, steering box, suspension, etc - $200.00
hood - $50.00
They are all in excellent condition and came off a race car a guy here built that he never got to race. Only thing we have to transplant are the inside door liners/handles which is cheescake. Custom BRAND NEW pink/flame job on the new parts (its the wifes after all). After this the only thing needing paint is the car itself (back panels/roof) and the rest will match which is more than it has right now lol. If it's going to look good with any other color might as well be our red we have now.
Could this happening be a sign of better things to come?
We need a new suspension so we're getting all that to. Will be nice to have a few parts to.

Re: Just got backed into...have some ?'s
Someone hit the rear view mirror on passenger side pulling the door a little away from body. called insurance company. They sent adjuster out. I had a $500.00 deductible, They gave me $1100.00 for the damage. I had a 91 RS i was going to take the whole door, replace it. I had a good body man that was able to tweak the door, put a mirror on it. A small ding is still in door. When I repaint the car, will put the 91 door on. So if your car is in clean, original condition, they should not total it. Mine only has a little over 50 thousand miles on it.
Re: Just got backed into...have some ?'s
Ok....so much has happened in the last 3 weeks...where to start. So the insurance company totaled it (AAA auto). Let me tell you all, do not EVER deal with AAA. This was the biggest most blatant dog and pony show I have ever dealt with. 3 weeks of "oh it's been passed to so and so but that's the last person you'll have to talk to". Right.
Anyways, long story short, the 89 is being towed to salvage tomorrow and is no more. NOW ON THE BRIGHT SIDE!!!!!
We got a pretty fair settlement at $2400. I've been scouring CL for weeks, getting updated searches etc. In this time I learned just how rare the HO models are and where they sit in the "value tree". I thought to myself..man that would be nice but I'll never find one. I found a 77 Camaro RS in Klamath Falls for sale for $1300 that was straight, clean title, brand new transmission and rebuilt engine. Owned by a guy and his son that have a garage down there. I was all set up to go down there next week and pick it up. Hey...with the $800 or so odd dollars left, I could have replaced all the interior parts needed (it was gutted, de rusted and painted).
Now..not 5 minutes after the trip was decided would happen, a posting came up right here in our home town!!! A BEAUTIFUL 1984 Camaro Z28 H.O. with 105k original miles, matching numbers, original owner with:
305 LB9 V8, (I think the Turbo350 trans..i don't know them well enough to know for sure thats right but is what he said), custom exhaust i believe is 3" with a nice phat aftermarket muffler in back. It's true dual exhaust and has straight pipes. It sure is nice to stand next to after having that wimpy 2.8L V6 in the 89. Pulls like MAD and even more with HO on. The paint is in TOP condition, it is 100% straight, interior is clean and kept beautifully (a light blue velor type i think). It has all the power options and they all work...no ****.
Engine is clean enough to eat off of and has brand new Eagle GT's.
What did we pick it up for? This is the part that's going to hurt.......$2495!!!!! $50 more than our settlement on the 89 and only $16 more a month to full coverage insure it. We only had liability on the 89. Unbelievable!!
God wants me in an H.O. There is no other explanation how that all came together
Stay tuned as the saga unfolds. I can't WAIT to get my hands and wrenches on the LB9!
