need ideas for removing third brake light.

need ideas for removing third brake light.
My car is an 86 and it has a third brake light mounted on top of the hatch not the inside.
I hate how it looks and i tried to remove it but the inside screws holding it in place are stripped. Looks like gm made them out of some cheap plastic that strips easily.
Is there any other way to remove the thing? I dont want to swap hatches , and dont want to risk breaking my hatch.
Anybody got any ideas on how to manage to get the screws off?
