Windshield Replacement

In the near future I will be replacing my windshield for my 92 Camaro RS. Has anyone tried installing a windshield on a third gen and had any success? It seems to be pretty straightforward but i want to be aware of anything that may be a problem.

Thanks

Re: Windshield Replacement

My advice call a glass company. Winshields are expensive, let the company take on the risk of breaking it. If it happens to not seal (watertite) they get the liability of taking it out and resealing it.

Re: Windshield Replacement

Just had one installed today for 125. I had a used windshield I bought at a junk yard for 85. I thought about doing it myself but decided against it. I didnt want to take the chance of it leaking and having to re-do it.

I'd rather not pay for it, as i'd rather spend my money on engine mods instead, and am looking at every option. If i could get it done for 210 id be happy. Unfortunately the engine is apart and not running so i cant drive it to any shop so the price will be higher if they have to drive to my house.

Re: Windshield Replacement

I just had two done, Camaro and honda, They paid me $110.00 for each. You guys need full coverage with glass. That's the only way to go. I watched both be done. Not really that easy of a job. If you want it to look perfect, use a professional.

Re: Windshield Replacement

I had one done when painting my car. He came the first time to take it out, I then painted the car, and he installed a new one about 2 weeks later. Total 130 (65 each time).

Re: Windshield Replacement

Just make sure the glass guy replaces the window trim molding with the proper size. I have seen a few get replaced, and the glass guy uses a trim that is way too wide. If they don't have the proper size, check out Modern Day Muscle. They still have originals.

Re: Windshield Replacement

Funny. I can't seem to find a glass company around here that will install or remove glass for me unless I purchase the glass from them. Ended up having a chip fixed on my wifes SUV and paying the dude cash to put a windshield on my 67. I guess it's an insurance or liability thing.

Re: Windshield Replacement

There is a good thread on this and somebody on the forum did it themselves fairly recently. 3rd gens are easier than 1st because the angle is different. Alot of glass shops won't put in used windshields in part because they don't want the hassle (you may have missed a chip or crack and they don't want the grief) and also bcuz they make better money selling you a windshield. Often a new ws installed is within $40 of jusst the installation of an old one. Liability is also there. You may get a guy from a local bidy shop to do on the side for a decent price, but agian if it breaks you bought broken glass and are out the money. I installed a new ws in my '72 Chevy(of course!)4x4 but was a nervous wreck the whole time. Buying a good sealant is key to making sure it doesn't leak. Going with a pro costs more but is a more sure thing, especially if you have no experience in it.

Re: Windshield Replacement

I did one in my 82 not to long ago. I had a glass company come remove it. Was going to have the same guy come install it...but I figured it is basicly glued in. Bought some windshield sealant from Napa and some new trim from Mondern Day. It took maybe 15 minutes to get it in and the trim around. Definetly not worth the $80 the glass guy wanted. Spraying it with the hose shows no leaks. On a 1-10 scale I give it a 3.

Re: Windshield Replacement

Got the windshield out after about 2.5 hours. That is a pain in the a$$ but would do it again to save the 80 to have it removed. Got a brand new windshield for 90 so im pretty happy with how its gone so far. My goal is to get this whole car restored with only parts as expenses, no labor.

Re: Windshield Replacement

I dont know if this page is dead, but I have just removed a windshield from the junk yard for $10.00.
Oh, it was very simple with the windshield removal wire used between the glass and frame.

I plan to re-install it this week. I have to determine the primer procedure for the glass to urethane installation. Can anyone advise on installation prep and primers?
