Having a problem with my rear hatch staying down
My hatch on my 87 TA has a motor that is supposed to pull down on the hatch to make it a tight seal. Only problem is, there is no button to activate the motor. So I loosened the bolts and put the claw mechanism as low as it would go. Still no luck, it was raised a little more than an inch above where its supposed to rest. My question is if theres a way to manually disengage that small motor enough to make the claw come down 1 inch? Or would I need to hook up a custom relay and make a switch? Id rather have the motor working properly. Thanks

The "button" to activate the motor to pull the hatch down is built into the mechanism. Look at where the hatch bracket goes into the pull down and you'll see a small triangular plastic piece. This is the switch. You can push it with your finger and the motor should pull down if it's already in the up position. If not then you've got some other issue.

Re: Having a problem with my rear hatch staying down
The mechanism and control circuit are mildly complex. Think about where the hatch latch fits and you'll see that the little triangular plastic switch is pushed one way when the hatch is closed and it pops out when the hatch is opened. There is another switch that is important. The reversing switch which controls the up/down direction. When the mechanism goes up you should hear a definitive click as the switch is flipped so when the hatch is closed the mechanism goes down and you should hear the click again as the switch is flipped ready for going up. Make sure you've got power and good grounds.
