Modifying a 4th Gen Wing
I have a '95 wing that I'm putting on my '89 Formula. I'm looking for ideas to add a lip to the rear edge of the wing (I'll have some pics tomorrow eve). The brake light cuts into the edge, and that is what I'm looking to work around. My thoughts are to add a piece/strip of wood via screws and then overlay the fiberglass to that. I'm thinking of maybe a 2"-3" wide piece of wood.
Has anyone done this, or have pics of it done?
Any pics/descriptions of what's inside the stock wing? Ideas on attachment points inside, etc?
Any helps/ideas are greatly appreciated.

TTOP350 has already said that the upper half of wing should have less material than the bottom for downforce. Here are pics of old wing showing that. The bottom half measures more distance than the top half, and the top half has a slight lip to it.

The '95 wing has almost equal halves. The top is slightly less than the bottom, but the top half not only does not have a slight lip, but it curves down toward the seam of the two halves.

Here's a pic where you can see the angle downward towards the rear edge/seam. And a pic of the seam.

Re: Modifying a 4th Gen Wing
The roundness of the rear edge makes it a little complicated. I will also try to go over the brake light lens leaving it intact. Here's a straight edge laying along side the back edge.
I may back out if this looks like it's too expensive. I would like any helps/input on how to do this and make it look good.

Looking to add a piece of wood like this that curves all the way around. Screw it to the top, then fiberglass over.

Re: Modifying a 4th Gen Wing
OK, the wood idea was a block-head idea
Talked to a body shop while getting paint quote. They suggested using plastic resin to build up back edge. I said that would require a lot of resin. I had this styrofoam in the car that I was going to mock -up. I brought it in, and asked if it was dense/strong enough to use. He said absolutely. Put a matte down, form the styrofoam, resin over, then glass.
I'll cut and sand and mock up something. Still undecided if this is a good idea/worth the cost/etc. I've always wanted a more pronounced lip on the back edge. If I start this, then I want to square-off the wing a little, too. Then if I do that, then.........where does it end?
Anyone attempted this? Have pics? Not worthwhile?

Re: Modifying a 4th Gen Wing
Trying to figure out the Styrofoam. Should I glue the Styrofoam directly to the wing (scuff it up) OR should I put a matte of fiberglass on the wing and then the Styrofoam then matte & glass? Will the adhesive destroy the Styrofoam? Would be easier to shape Styrofoam if glued directly. All this is new to me.
Just placing the pieces on the wing - looks like I'll use only half the height or so. I'm looking for slightly better than subtle (more than 3rd gen factory) lip.

Re: Modifying a 4th Gen Wing
This idea has been mentioned on here before. I was going to try to do it and was even offered a 4th gen wing to practice on. I decided on going with a different rear spoiler. What I was wanting to do would have been to straighten out the back edge and give it a small lip. My idea would have been to put a couple of screws into the back of the spoiler to hold the styrofoam in place then slowly form it to what I wanted. Keeping it a little small allowing for fiberglass to be built up. I would have eliminated the brake light. Good luck with this. I believe it will be the first one done this way. It will look like it belongs more with the straighter back edge.
I chose to go with a mecham spoiler as I wanted the rear window louvers.

I'm going to shelve this idea for now. Cost overruns killing me.
I know it's always best to do it up front, but I'll keep gathering ideas and maybe pick up a damaged one to practice on.
