I dont believe anyone said you cant use rattle can spray paint, I believe most people have simply pointed out that its not the correct way to do things. Plan and simple.

If you read the threads concerning this topic you will see what I'm talking about. Its ridiculous to expect any thing different with this one.I'm not saying this applies to anyone in particular and I'm not trying to diss what some people are doing but it just gets to the point, and seems to me that some like confrontation because that's what you will get.

Edit = Buy the way I took on a second job for over 1 and a 1/2 years to get my paint job.($3,000.00).
And if you read the actual cheap paint threads you'd see that for the money and time spent a majority of the cars come out looking much better than started.

Base/Clear is better, there is no doubt in its finish, durability and other qualities. But honestly I don't really care so much that my GTA doesn't have base/clear on it by a "reputable" shop. It looked so horrible before that I did all the prep work myself, and just didn't have a proper place to spray it. If I did I most likely would have bought the paint myself and sprayed the car. I did all of the hard work and for the money I paid the car looks great.

I bought my car to drive it, I bought it to race it. And once the 6spd, brakes, and others go into it, its going racing. There will be damage, there will be rock chips. And if I ever get comfortable with wheel to wheel there may even be contact. All of these things will damage the paint. The frame isn't perfectly straight, a car for a restoration project this is NOT. Putting $3k into paint isn't worth it. I'd rather spend $3k on drivetrain or interior. And I did. I bought new weather stripping, heads, cam, intake porting, T56, etc..

Its not like these people are forcing others to use the "cheap" method. If they get results that satisfy them let them do it. I can't stand the ***** mentality, and I really don't see any reason for Tuners to build FWD cars, but they do, and they enjoy it. And you know what? As long as they don't rag on my "heavy american pig of a car" then I don't care what they do with their "econobox".

If I had payed a shop to do the body work on my car there is no way I would have been able to do all of the work needed for under $4k. It needed too much work, and isn't worth the $$$.

That's $50 that could be better spent on something mechanical to keep the car on the road, or $50 that could be better spent elsewhere. It's about priorities--if you are unemployed and poor, you really have no business spending the little you have on something purely cosmetic.

I'm sorry to have to disagree, but the number 1 purpose of paint is to provide protection from corrosion, not provide for cosmetics. If a car has exposed metal, or surface corrosion has already started, then this is just as pressing an issue as a mechanical problem and must be corrected in a timely manner, not left to fester to only be fixed years later when one has money for a proper paint job. Surface rust can quickly become cancer and go from a simple afternoon fix to cutting out sheetmetal and welding in a replacement body panel in the right climate. If this means a car has to be driven around in a patchwork state, or with a repaired paint job temporarily, then that is the choice of the owner, and a prudent one if it is in the name of corrosion control. Do not mistake me, I am not defending the typical "backyard rattlecan nightmare" attempt at DIY paint jobs, only stating that some of the primered or patchwork cars you're commenting about may have better reasons for being in that condition than those you assume.

Are thouse Weld Prostars ? Its hard to see the cap,if so those arent cheap and they add "allot" to the car. The Stars are one of my favorites.

they are cragers same thing as the prostar but they have extra bolts....they do have weld caps and i traded them straight up for the stock wheels...they are in bad shape...super pittedeven after polishing them they look bad....everything ive done to this car i pretty much traded stuff for i think i have a total of $300 into the car since ive bought it pretty much a tune up and a fuel pump

it runs great and is one solid color thats all that matters to me

Make sure you strip off all that spraybomb first.

Wouldn't covering your car in rattlecan paint qualify as "ghetto rigged"? Gonna need a consensus here.

it looks shiny but the paint was so bad and there were primer spots all over it not to mentioned someone keyed the **** out of it when the PO owned it

and this isnt the first spray bomb job ive done......i did my 82 gt mustang

and my civic (wich was what ever i did to it rice)
the day i bought it

Re: Fix it right FFS

It would if he called it fixed, which he's not.

(this bit isn't about Sylus) And you don't need to spray the entire car with rattle can paint when you're trying to protect from corrosion - spray the spots you've cleaned up with epoxy or a paint that looks similar to the one on the car: you're protected either way and with the epoxy you don't have to clean it off later, or if you paint the spot you won't have to get spray can paint off everything, and your car will still look okay when you're just out cruising.

Re: Fix it right FFS

Im all against a half a** paint job but being I'm in college I cant afford the greatest of paint jobs. so Im gonna build a booth in my warehouse and me and my dad are gonna paint it back to the original color. I plan on taking the doors and hatch off and trying to get the best of a paint job i can for a DIY, but I do have a compressor and a 2 gallon paint pot with a gun. I have past experience painting conveyors, and rock crushers never a car so we'll see how it will go. I'm gonna use the dupli-color primer and paint so I think it should turn out good. Its killing me tho having a car that's half primer from where I had to sand out surface rust.

Re: Fix it right FFS

I hate Rustoleum. I use Duplicolor

For real though. There is alot to be said for doing something right the first time. I have two kids, a house, debt and a decent job. But even a $1500 paint job like mentioned before is out of the question. I am actually planning and already investing a DIY spray gun paint job with a mid grade material this summer but I can see both sides of the arguement. Let's get real. It's not like you see guys making 6-7 digits running out to spring for these cars. They are cheap, fun and available. Plus they carry the burden of being m*u*l*l*e*t* mobiles. These cars sell all day for 4-6K for a really good one. If it gets totalled, you aren't getting jack over NADA (just under 5K for mine). They are usually toys or desperate need daily's. How can you say just because someone sprays a car with a rattlecan they are dragging the rest of us down? You don't know their situation. That sprayed V6 above looks good and he is happy with it. Why does anybody elses opinion of his car matter? I can honestly say, I could care less what anyone here or on the street thinks of any of my cars. I enjoy them for me. Not what other people think. Everyone calls me a red neck for having it anyway. And it is a shiny all black 20 footer. Me actually doing the paint job the gun way is just so I can say I did it and because I enjoy it. And I can enjoy it for ME. Not what some joker on the street or internet thinks.

Some do.

If you seriously don't know, then you too missed the point of this thread.

You don't know their situation.
That is not a requirement.

Spraybombing your car is one thing, but then to post pics of it on an enthusiast website asking for opinions is another. Those of us that really care will offer an opinion regardless. Again, this is an enthusiast website. People care about these cars and don't like to see them treated this way...and it's time we speak up.

Re: Fix it right FFS

Some of us don't like seeing rims larger than the factory sizes on these cars.

Some of us don't like seeing original TPI cars bastardized into carbureted setups.

Some of us don't like seeing IROC-Z clones made out of 2.8L RS cars.

Some of us don't like seeing blacked out tail lights or LED's on these cars.

Some of us don't like seeing Sparco racing seats in a car that's obviously never been near a track.

The fact is there are many however that DO enjoy those things, as aggravating as they may be to others. But since they are doing them to their own cars, no one else really has any right to complain about it.

As far as rattlecan paint or primer jobs, if that's all the owner can afford, or as in depth as they plan to go, then that is their burden to bear. Maybe they even like the outcome. Either way, IT'S THEIR DAMN CAR. If you feel that every third gen MUST have a "proper" paint job, and since you like to wave your little emoticon pointing out how well off you are, maybe you can start a charity to provide funds for just that purpose. Paint is for corrosion prevention, anything else is secondary. As long as the surface is protected by something, the owner is at least making an effort to not let another one of these cars rust to pieces.

Brilliant retort. The point I was trying make is that not all of us are on our last dollar. Not all of us would make the foolish decision of spending that last dollar on paint for a car. Perhaps like the rest of the thread, you missed the point of my post as well.

Your corrosion argument is without basis. Spraybomb paint isn't a good rust inhibitor....regardless of what the label says.

this whole argument is stupid, started by some A-hole who thinks he is high and mighty and able to tell people what to do with their own property.

If you dont like what people do with their car.. tuff crap... no one is coming over to your house with the car.. If yours is so nice and awesome, then it will stay nice and awesome and look better than the rest..

I may think your wife is white trash fat cow who shouldnt wear skinny jeans, do i need to start a thread telling her how to loose weight cause i dont like the sight of her?? no..

shut up.. lock this pointless thread, let people do what they want and shut up.. you're not the thirdgen appearance police

If someone posted a thread of their fat wife in skinny jeans and said she looked awesome, they should be prepared to deal with negative criticism. I think it's the same thing in this case.

thats where you are confused..

criticism is one thing.. telling someone what/how they should or should not do is another..

i can not like a car.. and say "yeah those wheels are ugly" or "those BMW conversion lights look like @$$.."

me telling them they are wrong for doing it and need to do it another way is crossing the line

Re: Fix it right FFS

Wow! This seems like a hot button issue on both sides of the aisle.Let me open by saying this-YOUR MONEY, YOUR RIDE.Ballgame.

I was on here to look for other info but for some reason I looked at this thread.I'm not taking sides; there have been excellent points persented by both sides here.

I presently own 2 "collector cars", a 1965 Brand X and my '92 RS.On both vehicles I am taking care of the mechanicals first.I would like to have both of them done before I retire/die/become a victim of a terrorist attack. The '92 has a decent shine to it; the T-tops are trashed and the front facia could use some work, but it cleans up well and is a nice weekend 'cruiser'.

I've had the '65 for about 10 years now.I have tried to half-*** paint it any number of ways, none of which looked good.I have decided to go with Eastwood's ratrod black as mentioned by a previous poster.(I wouldn't dare do this to my third-gen,but I'm not hatin on those who would want to.)Now speaking of paint jobs......

Every time a go to a cruise night or car show,I see a car or two with a halfway decent paint job.I'll try to talk to the owner and the conversation would go kind of like this:
Me-"Nice paint job.That's a cool loking color."
Him-"Thanks."
Me- "Who laid down the paint?"
Him- "I did.Been doing it since I was 16.Did a bunch of '57s and a few chopped-top Mercs.I did my buddy's minivan last week."
Me- "Hey, you see that '65 over there?I was wondering....
Him-"Yeah, it looks pretty straight."
Me-"Thanks, I'd really like to get it painted one day, and if--
Now here is where the bs train rolls in.....
Him-"Yeah bud, the old lady says I can't paint in the garage anymore." or "My garage only holds one car and that's mine"or "Well between my '39 Hudson, my son's Chevelle and my Balloptagooptamobile,I really don't have time for side work."

Hold it. Wait a minute. Let me think here.

Isin't this supposed to be a ****-poor economy?Isin't everybody in some kind of debt? Isin't everybody Jonesin' for some extra cake? I have three buddies, a roofer a plumber and an electrician and they're doing side work just to pay the bills.

I want a decent (not concours)paint job,I'd be willing to help on whatever I could.Of course I would buy all materials and pay you decently for your time.Everybody talks a good game but nobody wants to walk the walk.

[Disclaimer: I'm not hatin on body shop guys and painters. Most of you guys are talented and do a great job.Kudos to all of you who own cherry cars.I want one when I grow up.Hell,I'm only 53!]

For those of us who can't have the paint job of our dreams,we do what we gotta do.In the two car clubs I belong to, you don't even have to own one of "these"cars;the love of these cars alone qualifies you for membership. Its all about the cars, people. Let the hound dogs run around with the foxes...

With all that being said,I'm still looking for somebody in the Baltimore area to paint at least one of my cars.Any leads?Just send me a PM.

Thank you and mad props to the Third Gen Forum!!!

I'm not sure what's worse, posting disdain for all the rattlecan jobs on an enthusiast website, or the fact that 3/4 of the responses are pro rattlecan...

Why on earth would you spraybomb that '82 GT? That car looked perfectly fine.

it was pink....the paint was peeling, faded, cracked and looked terrible.....that car was the biggest POS i ever owned i was gonna put the correct nose on it but ended up ripping the engine trans and rear out for my 64k mile rust free 80 notchback

and honestly people can complain all they want about spraybomb paint jobs but when it comes down to it its all about what the owner likes......ive gotten more thumbs up in that car since i painted it and put the z28 emblems on it than when it was multi colored

you know, as much as you're all sick of people talking about doing things "cheap", i'm so f=ing sick of perfectionist ***** thinking everything should be done the "right" way. Whether it's putting a fouth gen center console in, doing a rattle can paint job, which can be done very well if done correctly, doing anything outside the norm...they get blasted. it's idiotic to criticize everyone on this premise. Which I know i'm doing now, don't care. We all do what we can to breathe life into our cars, get off them for doing things different.

I agree, and just wait, someone is trolling and will see this and say how old this is and why did you bring up this ancient thread. The same people that say "do a search" every time someone asks a question.

...and the theme of the thread resonates once again. Laziness. Why do a search when one can just start a new thread asking the same thing over and over again. "Why repair urethane ground effects with a sandable urethane filler, when I have a perfectly good gallon of bondo on the shelf." "Finding a body supply store is difficult when Walmart is right up the road." You get the idea.
