Re: targa top

I would think this would be an easy mod. Take your t-top car, cut out the middle roof piece, put a one-piece weather strip all the way around. Measure your opening, and make a frame to fit there. Cover the frame with the fabric of your choice or lay your own carbon fiber. Congrats, you have a targa top! :-)

That said, I've never done this, nor do I have a t-top car...... but in my brain it looks like a theoretically easy mod to do. If I had t-tops, I would do this in a heartbeat! I think targa tops look rad. I saw a pic of a third gen conversion like this, and it looked really good. I don't remember if it was photoshopped because the owner was thinking about it, or if it had actually been done.

Re: targa top

removing the center t-top bar in the roof would drastically reduce the integrity and strength of the roof. The windshield wasn't designed to take all of that weight in the event of a rollover so it seems rather unsafe unless it has some strong braces in it. But at that point there is no real weight savings anymore?

just my two cents.

Re: targa top

Do the 4th gens not have a center "T"? I don't think this eliminates the center "T" section that is needed for support. I truly have never looked since my 4th gen is a vert....

Yes, I knew about the Simon & Simon Targa but is this top for a top with no center channel?

if it had a center channel/support it would not be a real "targa" top . a real targa top is open fully across the car . (damn i miss my 89 "T" top car) anyway i would love to see any recent "targa" jobs .

This is true.... The structure of that Simon & Simon car HAD to have something added to the frame someplace or else it has probably folded in half by now. As small as that center section is it does a LOT for structure. Targa would be cool but also getting a lot closer to a junk yard car one day by doing so.

If you use the Search feature here on TGO, you will find that it has been talked about a lot & even done a few times (to a 3rd gen).
