Axel info please?

i keep seeing in people's profiles about having
Axle/Gears3.73 what does this mean?

that is the "ratio"of the axle-the number of times the
pinon gear or driveshaft must turn to make the ringgear
or drivewheels turn one time

the higher the gearing the more low end torque you will get. The lower gears like the that came with most later model v8's 2:73's are for fuel economy.

You can jack up the vehicle and chalk mark both the driveshaft and wheel and do one full revolution with the wheel while counting aproximately how many times the driveshaft did spin. 3 spins would be a 3.08 3.5 spins of the driveshaft would make it a 3.42 etc.. this only works on a posi traction rear end. On an open differential, jack up the vehicle only enough that one wheel stays on the ground and you need to rotate the tire two times.
