On my 85, the "light" is just a piece of fiber-optic cable that runs from the bulb near the shift indicator. There is no switch or anything like that.

My Car has the "ashtray" light on the underside of the dash too, only mine works (just had to put in a bulb). The problem with it is that the bulb & hole are so small that the light doesn't shine on anything (you have to hold your hand 1" from the hole just to make sure the light is on). Im going to replace the bulb & holder with a more common 194 bulb

I have the same light on my 89RS. All I had to do to make it work again was change the bulb. It works on the same power supply for the rest of your dash lights. Like the other guy said, it's pretty dim even when the bulb is working. I.E. it has to be pretty damn dark inside the car to even notice it! If you can't get any power to it, just do like you were saying, and run a jumper wire to your shift indicator light wiring on your console for power.

I have the same thing in my car, has been stumping me for years. I guess you could make it a halogen map light if you wanted.

The light is slightly different design for my 88 Iroc and 90 RS, but both have a very small hole. I contemplated opening up the hole to let in more light, but I figuired instead it is purposely designed to have a very small hole. That way it works like a pinhole camera, letting an even low level of light over a wide range of angle. Opening the hole would focus more light over a narrower angle destroying the effect intended of a diffuse ambient light.

Re: ASH Tray LIGHT

kiztope did you ever find the wire to plug into on your 1992? Was it taped to another harness somewhere?

Re: ASH Tray LIGHT

Wow! Bumping a 17+ year old thread for the most useless light ever... That is dedication.

Some thirdgens don't have the wiring for the light. Just the way it is. You might find a pigtail for the light somewhere in the dash harness, but it's really a waste of time to even bother looking, since it's a useless light even when it's there.

Re: ASH Tray LIGHT

I couldn't care less about my post count. You asked a question and I gave you an answer. It's extremely likely that if your car doesn't have the light, it probably doesn't have the wiring for it either. Unlike many other options, that specific plug usually isn't there. And it's certainly not worth adding it, since the light projected by the factory setup is extremely limited. Like if you're in a pitch black room, but can see a light through a pin hole from another room, but only in your peripheral vision and it disappears when you look directly at the light source.

The better solution if you need more light on the console would be to get a rear view mirror from a later Firebird. They have the console light in the spot normally occupied by one of the map light switches, and that light actually casts a bit of light.

A very small diffused LED would cast more light than the normal Camaro console light.

PS It's bad manners to bump an old thread. It's really bad manners to bump 30 classifieds threads asking for parts that aren't listed in the thread, and that can be found in any junkyard in America, or new from GM. Seriously, aside from a select few of us, most members aren't watching threads from 6 months ago, much less 17 years. Try using the Private Message system, or email.

You act like I'm the only one that points out when someone bumps an old thread, or suggests searching old threads. Sorry I don't take more time to sugar coat my comments. They aren't intended to be hurtful, I guess some people just have extremely thin skin.

If you have a problem with my posts sonjaab, you can always add me to your block list and you won't have to read them.

Edit: See? It's easy.

Re: ASH Tray LIGHT

Bad manners to ask guys that parting out cars for parts? No. You are wrong. I've gotten PMs and responses and others are asking for parts to.

FYI Drew, here in DFW area the F-bodies are long gone. If you find one in a bone yard it's a skeleton.

No one should be talked down to for asking a question on the boards, that's the bad manners I see in your posts. Its not up to you if the question is value and you don't need to say a word if you don't something to contribute.

It's not about sugar coating anything. It's about contributing in a professional way.

Re: ASH Tray LIGHT

Other people are hitting those threads because they don't realize that they're old threads that you've bumped to the top.

You don't need to find a thirdgen to find a relatively common socket used for marker and interior lights on many applications.

I did have something to contribute, you're just focusing on my amusement that you bumped a thread old enough to vote.

I'm not a professional forum poster. I'm not on a payroll. I do this for fun. If I see someone doing something goofy on the forum, wasting their time and the time of others, mucking up the works, I'll generally take a moment to try to help that person understand what they're doing and find a viable alternative. That's not talking anyone down, it's constructive criticism. I just didn't realize you were so sensitive that it'd hurt your fragile feelings.

You're just a message board troll in denial.

Look at your posts, telling people not to bump, finding amusement, telling people to block you cause you can't stop posting, thinking you are hurting other feelings, arguing.

Turn the computer off and go work on your cars man.

Re: ASH Tray LIGHT

Trolls don't usually contribute to forums. They usually haven't written tech articles, edited lengthy guides, or served as a moderator. They don't generally take the time to answer questions or scan and upload diagrams, etc.

I'm not telling anyone to do anything. I joked about your bumping a really old thread, and addressed the question you were asking. I even went out of my way to show you a few workarounds that might help you reach your goals. It's not my fault you can't take a joke, or criticism, or advice.

I've been active on this forum since the beginning. I'm not going anywhere.
