Passenger seat belt wont retract!!

The seat belt on the passenger side on my IROC wont retract into the roof. It's dangerous and annoying. Can it be fixed or will it need to be replaced??

Thanks

Rob

There was a recall on these for years; my 83 had the same problem.

Search the GM recall list, you might get it done for free.

From: out of my mind; be back in 5 minutes....
Car: 1989 Firebird Formula
Engine: Internal Combustion
Transmission: Completed
Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Same thing happened to the passenger side unit in my 83 SC...it was fully pulled out and wouldn't retract. I had to remove the two mounting bolts which hold it to the roof, and pop off a plastic cover (I think it was on the door pillar side of the unit), and then pulled out on the metal wire 'spring' out of the 'spiral' grooves, which then allowed the mechanism to retract normally.
The purpose of those grooves is to allow for the belt to 'slacken' a bit by leaning forward in your seat a bit, then leaning back so it doesn't cinch up snug. You could probably cut the spring wire with some wire cutters to prevent this from happening again.
You may be lucky enough to dis-engage the wire without removing it from the car by using a long piece of stiff wire (coathanger).

Good luck
Pete

this happens to me now and then on the drivers side. i just pull the headliner down a little being a t-top, and look to find the side grooves on the retractor ( you'll know what i mean when you see it), and take a flat head screwdriver, and push back on it to help it reverse the retractor. once it goes back a little, it should retract it back all the way.
