Gated Shifter???

Im prolly gonna get flamed for this, but im going to ask anyway. Although i know SOME people may not like it, (im not sure if it qualifies as rice or not, but i dont care), i have always loved the look of the gated shifters in the Italian sports cars... with no boot, just the shaft and ****, with the aluminum gate underneath it... How doable is this? Im somewhat of an idiot about trannys, so i dont know if the entire transmission is different in certain aspects, or if its just an aluminum or steel plate.

similar to that would rock

EDIT - in case anyone reads the sig and gets curious, the auto isnt staying in the car much longer if i can help it, thats why im asking thanks again

You can probably make your own if you have access to aluminum and a plasma cutter.

I know i could get the aluminum cut and all, but what i wondering is the specifics of the transmissions.... I mean, the channels on the Ferarri shifter are very narrow, and they are perfectly straight... On like, a T56, it seems like there is a wider "glide path" that narrows going in to the gear, like... to guide in all the idiots like my father who cant drive a standard... Am i crazy? I wish i could find someone who has done this already, that would rock....

Anyone else know about it at all?

Yeah man I say go for it! I would like to do this to my bird. I have a shop here at work and I have thought about doing it. I dont know if I would make it out of brushed aluminum or high polished stainless. I guess I could make 2 of them..... But I have a t-56 so I could only make them for a 6. I will probably make one after I get the interior back together. All I can say is if you do make one yourself you will have to take lots of measurements. Like someone else on the board said measure 100 times cut once.

Im glad anyone approves of the idea, because i love it... and i know a few of you are thinking about doing it as well... But what about the actual tech of it all... I mean, about the width of the gates and all... anyone know where to point me for this?

Take a few basic measurements of the shifter in every gear,, then make a cardboard template & make small refinements until you get the desired effect (cardboard is cheap to screw up a few times). after it's just right,, trace out on you metal of choice & cut. If you only have simple tools & material available,, use sheet metal and have it chromed,,, it can't cost too much to have something so small dipped. It would make a unique accent to the interior.
As far as your shifter question,, the t-5 & 56 are internally gated unlike the old 4 speeds,, so they never get out of adjustment(except for slop from a worn out pivot) to cause a problem with the faux shifter gate,, if that's what you were asking
Good luck

Thanks dead, i really appreciate it... This is something ive always wanted to do... but information is hard to come by. I just wanted to verify that the actual gates in the gears arent really different than the Ferrari's. Thanks again!

Here's my two cents.

Take the shifter **** off, cut a hole in it the size of the shaft, then put the cardbord on top of the plastic plate and cut the cardboard as you shift through the gears.

I know I sound confusing, but that's because I have an auto and I just brainstormed this idea.

Laterz,
Jesse

PS I think it would look cool too.

How would you keep crap from falling in there? Oh, well, I guess you could get those things meant for the bottoms of a house's front door.. looks like a thin stiff brush.

It'd definately be different! Who knows, maybe you could market them & make a few bucks! Plus what I like about it is you can try it, and it won't do any permanent damage. Go for it! (A wrinkle-black finish might look sweet, too.)

heres what i would do.
take and cut a cardboard "frame" the size of the stock console piece, and cut the center section out of it to make a picture frame looking thing. then put the shifter in every gear, and mark the position of the shifter on the cardboard. then take the cardboard and set it on a piece of aluminum, transfer the marks, and drill a hole in each spot. take a dremel or some cutting tool and make the pattern. id say it would look sweet as hell. polish the aluminum and it would look great. makes me wish i had a stick....
