I recently repaired that on my 90 RS convertible. I noticed the rear trunk (in my case since a convertible) was only going up or down a little bit. I noticed the latch mechanism seemed to be loose. I took the rear plastic out and pulled out the pull down hatch assy. I found the plastic housing for the motor was cracked and broken. I repaired it with a piece of angle steel and epoxy. I have taken apart a total of 3 pull down assemblies and all have been cracked at the mounting locations. If you catch it early before it completely breaks then repairing it is much easier. I made a reinforcement out of thin aluminum sheet stock and epoxied it to the face. I formed tabs that overlap onto the sides and also filled with epoxy. The condition can also be caused by the plastic rail guides being deteriorated, but I don't know of any fix for that other than getting another unit from a donor or GULP, buying another new assembly. Good luck, I hope it is a cheap repair. I do recommend picking up some spares though.
