I bought the non-airbag 91-92 Formula (??) steering wheel to replace the airbag wheel in my 92 Firebird.

I thought it would fit on fine but it makes a bad clicking noise when doing a full turn, as if something were binding. It's also too hard to turn throughout its whole range.

Any thoughts on this? I'm thinking of selling it (the wheel's in great shape) and buying a Grant or something.

 

yeah, the spline the wheel bolts too is a different length, swap the column or go aftermarket.

A-ha! Thanks Drew, I knew something was definitely wrong, and it wasn't the installation. I just came in right now from re-installing my old one (minus airbag connections).

I'll have to start looking at aftermarket ones, after I sell this one.

 

Something else to keep in mind is that you may have trouble mounting an aftermarket wheel since the mounting kit may not be intended for your steering column. I ran into this on my beater Firebird and ended up just reinstalling the original wheel. If you could find a non airbag column cheap, it would be a easy swap.
