my 91 firebird has the third brake light on the top of the hatch, and when i bought the car it was out and hasnt worked since...i changed the bulb and that wasnt the problem...has anyone else had this problem or any suggestions on how to check what it is? thanx

My third brake light didn't work on my 88 IROC when I bought it in November. As it turned out, the inside was all melted and the connector was messed up. Getting an entire brake light unit wasn't hard (Chevy dealer), but getting the proper connector was a pain. It works fine now, but it was more expensive that I thought it would be....

I suppose what I am saying is full replacement, assuming you see voltage at the wires when someone depresses the brake pedal.

 

take the bulb out and have a look at the connections. On the V6 bird the plug for the bulb broke into about 5 pieces. After epoxy'ing the assembly back together and playing with the terminals it worked fine.

I had the same problem, but I can't really figure out how I fixed it. I changed the bulb and it still didn't work. The next day as I was pulling into the garage, my wife noticed that it was working. Go figure.
