Convertible Tonneau Cover

Has anybody out there ever removed the upholstered vinyl piece from the rest of the flip up convertible cover to do paint prep or repair? I've removed all obvious fasteners but the upholstered piece is stuck like glue to the steel flip-up tonneau. Any advice?
