air bag steering wheel

I am going to remove my wheel and trade in for something a little nicer. Does anyone out there have any idea how this is done safely, I would like to keep for resale.

Thanks

I have an airbag steering wheel, and I've also thought about replacing it. Do you have trouble honking the horn? I have to press the horn so incredibly hard to get it to work, that it's usually too late to make any difference. Mine is probably just a bad connection, though.

I took mine off for a Grant GT. Theres a good tech article about the safe removal of the bag on this site.

A few things...

The 90 up steering columns are different than the 82-89 columns. For this reason the only factory steering wheels that will fit the 90 up cars are 90 up steering wheels. A 82-89 steering wheel will rub on the column and generally make the car impossible to drive. A grant wheel can be made to work, but I've heard you have to use two of their install kits. The reason the airbag steering wheels are hard to blow the horn is because GM used vinyl plastic that warps with age. Unfortunately the part that warps is the horn buttons. So you get to push it to unwarp the vinyl then a bit further to blow the horn. Also the airbag wheels use the cheapest horn contacts you could possibly imagine. They break easily. On my beater 91 V6 bird the buttons broke and this caused the horn to blow whenever it wanted till the fuse blew.

The only suggestion I can make for a good stock appearing wheel is to find an 88 or 89 steering column and swap the column and use a 82-89 steering wheel.

You can use a Grant wheel on a 90-up column. I used only 1 kit plus one washer to prevent rubbing. The horn hook up is the same as with any 82-89 car.
