Installing weather stripping

I've searched, and haven't found any definitive answer. I'm planning on replacing all my weather stripping tomorrow with a kit I bought from Hawk's. I can't find instructions on exactly how to do this. I don't want to mess up my new kit; any help would be appreciated.

1A Auto also has a few videos on the subject that may be helpful.

You may also want to search their YouTube channel for others.

Good luck with your project and post some comments and photos of the process. Those are always helpful to others.

Re: Installing weather stripping

How much instruction do you need for weatherstripping. Rip the old out and replace with new...very hard to do it wrong, as long as all the clips and screws go back were they belong.

Re: Installing weather stripping

I'll keep this thread updated. I was going to do it today, but it turns out I need adhesive and a heat gun. This will need to wait until Monday.

Re: Installing weather stripping

Did you purchase a weatherstrip kit for a Mustang? What is the need for a heat gun? Quite honestly I'm not sure why you'd need adhesive.

Re: Installing weather stripping

According to these videos, you need the heat gun to weaken the existing adhesive, and then, I assume, since the factory used adhesive, that I would need to use some as well.

Re: Installing weather stripping

Huh. Mine didn't have adhesive and I believe it's the factory weatherstripping. You may want to give it a try before purchasing a heat gun.

Re: Installing weather stripping

You just ripped it out and replaced them? The A1 videos indicate you even need to remove the hatch to do the hatch weather stripping.

Re: Installing weather stripping

I pulled them out without issue. The doors and door frames didn't have any adhesive. My hatch was already off and it appears there was some sort of sticky substance securing the weatherstrip, but it wasn't difficult to remove. Took 10 minutes to remove everything. I haven't installed them as I haven't painted the car, but when I do, I doubt I"ll use adhesive. Maybe a little to hold the ends of the hatch piece, but that'd be about it.

Re: Installing weather stripping

Installing t-top or door weatherstripping without weatherstripping adhesive will likely result in leakage, especially the t-tops.

How do you clean the existing adhesive? I found nothing that cleaned it effectively.

I had to scrape it off because I was repainting the car. I would try the heat gun method you had mentioned. If there are alot of videos using that method then it should work. The t-top area I would recommend scraping and painting with por15 first to prevent rust. Then you can seal the rubber to it with the adhesive and never see the paint.

Good luck with the project!

Go to home depot and buy a 4 dollar 4 inch wire wheel. Put it on a corded drill and the wheel will take it right down to the metal if you want it to.

that's what I used to get all the crud out before installing my rear bow seal (convertible). worked flawlessly and took only 3 min

I also used oven cleaner to get the few places the wheel could not reach. it melted all the old adhesive away and wiped off with a cloth. $5 wire wheel from harbor freight + $10 "easy off" oven cleaner

notice the right side has been taken down via wire wheel vs the left (has not been done)
