new shifter plate not aligned correctly?

Just installed a new GM shifter plate (for my 4-spd automatic) on my console and the orange "flag" that indicates the gear you're in isn't aligned correctly. In Park and reverse it's ok but gradually gets farther off as you shift through N, OD, D, 2 and 1. When I'm in 1st gear it indicates 2nd gear. Is there a simple way to correct this?
