Are firebird and camaro interior parts interchangable?
Are firebird and camaro interior parts interchangable?
I am getting ready to go junk yard shopping for interior parts to change my red interio to grey or black. I have an 86 camaro and am wondering of firebird parts will work. Also, will most other years work? Thanks a lot. ~ Arnold
Some of the parts are interchangable. Some will have the Firebird or Camaro logo on it, others will fit but look different. Best way to find out is to go to the junk yard and look around for what you need. I'd recommend staying with the Firebird interior myself, unless you want to change it all. Having pieces that are noticably different is like having a black hood and blue trunk lid on a red car, it just looks strange. Good luck.
All interior parts will fit except the console Auto will fit but not the manual, I just put camaro seats in my wifes car which is a Trans Am the back seat I had to cut off the ears cause the seat is split and the TA seat is one piece put in new carpet and everything this car was and auto and I changed to 5-speed. Working on headliner next Good Luck hope you have lots a patience.
After going thru 3 interiors, I finally got the right ones, I can tell you that not all of them are interchangeable. Excuse my inability to correctly name the interior parts but if you bear with me here, this might save you some time. I have an 82 Camaro. I pulled parts from an 83, 86 and an 89.
The first thing I noticed was different in the interiors was the the plastic trim piece that runs along the bottom of the door and partially houses the seat belt. Older models have a specific hole for the base of the seat belt to feed thru where as the newer models actually have part of the trim cut out to make room for a piece that actually covers the seat belt.
The second thing to look for is the rear seat belt housing. For the back seat belts in older models, there is a lower sail panel trim piece that is indented and the seat belt feeds thru it. With the newer models, the seatbelt doesn't feed thru it at all. It comes from above and behind the seat in the headliner. *If* you do get the newer trim piece for this, it is no problem to dremel a nice hole for the seat belt to feed thru from the bottom. The interior trim piece looks exactly like the older model but it does not have the cut out. Or, you can update your seat belts. With the left over hole in the top seat belt option, you can use it for speakers or lighted fixtures.
Next difference is the front seat rail covers. You know, the plastic trim pieces that cover the seat bolts. Those are not interchangeable between Firbirds/TA'a and Camaros.
Another little difference. In the gauge gluster, the clear plastic piece that covers your cluster is different quite often. Look to make sure you have gauges in all the same spots but more inportantly, pay attention to where the trip meter button is placed. Sometimes they are located at about 9 o' clock and sometimes they are located at 6 o'clock.
Finally, the last piece to be aware of is the rear hatch piece that houses the hatch release mechanism. This is the interior trim piece in the very back, usually with a light installed. I have 3 very different pieces for this. Make sure the one you get will fit into your car. The hatch release and "hinged cargo cover door" can make or break if you get the right one and if it will work. Also, the lock assembly access is different on some models. Also, be aware of options like rear window defrost, etc. They made those trim pieces to accommodate those options.
I would recommend that you either take the interior trim pieces that you want to replace with you or take your car with you. This will ensure that you get the exact parts that you need. Good luck to you.
