What can I do to prevent rust... ???????

my car got hit a month ago.. and it is starting to develop a little rust where the damage is. What should I do to prevent this? I will be getting a paint job sometime this summer, but I dont want to get it covered in rust by then. I plan on keeping this car a loooooong time. Also, I dont want and Bondo on my car at all....

Anyone got any suggestions for me?

Wet sand the area around the rust spots (getting the rust off too of course) with some 320 and put some zinc primer on it (rustolium high zinc will work fine).

If you're finicky about primer spots on your car,,,, get a 6oz can of duplicolor that closely matches the color of the paint now (sold at autozone) or plastikote has lots of available colors too. The good thing about Duplicolor is it's laquer,,, you can rub it out to color blend it to the surrounding area.
Hope that helps ya out some

No biggie,,

Standard papar is like what you get at the hardware store (brown color)

Most auto stores carry paper that has a coating on it to keep it from falling apart when it's wet (paper is black in color)

When you wet sand you want to keep a bucket of water, spray bottle or a hose,,, as long as theres'a a source of clean water.

The water acts as a sorta of,, um,, lubricant,, and keeps the grit from burning off or clogging with paint. Just keep the area you are sanding "clean" with fresh water (not constants but every little bit to wash 'dirt' away).

Mainly just feather out the sharp edges smooth to keep chipping to a minimum and get rid of the rust.

I realize sanding rust with water seems stupid,,, but if the metal is clean & you dry it right after then prime it you won't have a problem. The key is a zinc based primer to keep the rust from spreading. (zinc is what coats the gas tank to keep it from rusting just in case you care to know how well it works)
