Another 4th gen console question
Another 4th gen console question
Okay, I think I'm missing something here. The 4th gen consoles do not have the HVAC and radio pod in it. So what do I have to do to put one in the car? Do I need to cut my existing console? Anyone done this yet and have pics? I would love to see the process, because I really want a 4th gen console in my firebird. I know that some of the newer firebirds have a separate HVAC/radio pod from the lower console. Will that work my 84? My 84 has the one piece console.
Thanks,
Chris Payne

Sorry no pics yet, There are two types of Trans am consoles, one style is like the 93 and then there is a newer style with switches up front. There have been a lot of post lately on this subject. You can do a search to learn more. Heres the scoop. I have a 93 trans am console with a 6 spd top plate. It bolted right in to the stock holes with no trouble to my 86 (auto trans). From what I can gather the fourth gen auto consoles have some fittment problems.

There are 93-97 consoles and 97-00 consoles. The 97-00 consoles have the cup holders for the back seat.
The automatic consoles do have problems with clearance of shift linkage, but the manual ones bolt in pretty well with only having to cut off the front pocket so it fits under the stock radio housing.
You will also have to deal with relocating your window switches or fabing a plate for them in the new center console somewhere.
