I need to remove the insulation under my hood so I can get the louvers out for painting. How do I get it apart without destroying the retainers or the insulation? Should I use something like a trim panel removal tool?

 

I used panel clip pliers from Harbor Freight, http://bit.ly/Rw4Qy5, and they work great for both door panels and the hood clips. Unless your insulation is in great condition, I would replace it. Mine was nothing more than a fire hazard so it had to go. I bought new hood and door clips at Ace Hardware. Do not remember how much they cost, but they were a lot cheaper than at the auto parts store.

Were the replacement retainers exact matches? My car is very original and I really want to keep it that way.

 

I used a gentle pulling and twisting motion to remove the clips then put them in my old dishwasher that I use for cleaning plastic parts. (works great for old mouse filled duct work)
