Re: NEW MEMBER

if that was my shop, i would probably "back into" the rear bumper cover while trying to lay paint on the fender ...right after i painted it! it aint easy painting in a small room!

Re: NEW MEMBER

Yea, I know what you mean. My plan is to do the bumper cover last on each coat and hopefully not back in to anything!! I dont want to do it separate because with my luck the color wont match and that would look bad for sure!

Re: NEW MEMBER

if you wanted the best color match, it would be better to have the bumper cover either back on the car- or at least in the proper orientation to vertical- as it would be on the car- that pretty metal flake settles in differently depending on which side is up....when i did mine it was all just plain red- so i painted it like you've got yours. maybe you can just put it back over the rear bumper support? same goes for the nose.

Re: NEW MEMBER

Since you first mentioned it, Ive been thinking and I think I will make some brackets where I can hang it from the wall and give it the proper orientation, also, I wont be as likely to bump into it!! I'll post a pic of the setup later. The nose is on the car

Re: NEW MEMBER

Got 3 coats of clear laid down. It's orange peely, but should turn out ok after the cut n buff... no fisheyes, trash is minimal and no runs, so I'm happy. Just wish I could get it to lay down a little slicker... Will see how the buff job goes, and if its not good enough, I'll sand it and shoot more clear. Good 8 hours on this today. Tired.

Unmasked

Got it all unmasked and am happy to say it really looks, great. The color is a 98% match to the door jambs, couldnt be happier about that!

I set one of the side GFX on there that I painted last week and it matches that too.

This thing is gonna look killer after the cut n buff.

I can feel it!!

Next time maybe I should thin the clear just a tad more, not sure. When I was spraying the paint it was going on super wet and didnt look peely. So I really dont know what else I can do other than buy a $400 gun... Happy with the low overspray gun, the HF would have killed me for sure in there...air is moving but it sure does fog up then clears out pretty quick.

I made a couple mistakes. The first was I forgot to tack off the rear bumper cover before the first coat of base... shouldnt be super noticeable but theres some trash on it.

The second is I have 2 very slight low spots on the pass. door that I should have fixed better...they arent super noticeable but I see them when I sight down the side.

All in all I think I did awesome and Im not trying to brag. The car looks just like my dark blue Nova did after the guy painted it and before the cut n buff, and he was a 40 year body/paint man...so I think I done good!!!

Not YET! But I'm sure that day will come. My shirt brushed the driver side twice while spraying the roof and the hood, but again, luckily it was on the second coat of base... That was a badluck coat!! LOL

I know one thing, removing the wheels makes pulling the hose around from side to side a ton easier for sure... all in all a great day!! Any day without do-overs is a great day!!

Re: NEW MEMBER

i agree on the tires! i always take mine off. i painted a bunch of cars with a tyveck suit on....keeps clothes from drooping. when i helped my neighbors paint their 85 last year, we did it in their garage- with the door open....we kept getting little black fruit flies in the paint....we had to stop that day- it was getting ridiculous!

Re: NEW MEMBER

What pressure you spraying clear? Might try upping the pressure few psi see if it helps the peel. Also most clears I've sprayed need to have right temp activator.

Thanks, yea I had it at 26-27 psi with the trigger pulled. (Max psi for the gun is 29) I'm kinda thinking now that I maybe needed a bit more pressure. New gun and just getting the hang of it.

I used medium reducer and hardener...it was around 60's ish in the garage, but I definitely wouldnt have wanted anything any faster than that.

If I can't buff it out decent, I'll wet sand it down and shoot some more clear at a higher psi... Just money right? Its strange because when the paint was spraying on the panel, it looked wet as hell and smooth, when it flashed I got the peel.

if you've got plenty on it- at least three coats, you can sand/polish it flat.

Re: NEW MEMBER

Just spent the time to read all the post, I have been using the same 3 Warwick 904L's for past couple of years, since gotten rid if all my high end guns. All the paint guys I tell this too think i am nuts, but the 904 is the best I have ever used.

I use SPI Universal clear and spray at 29 psi, lays down like glass.

Might try 29 psi on test panel let it sit overnight see how it comes out.

BUFF

making progress, the orange peel was pretty bad, Im sure I didnt have enough psi now... anyway, theres enough clear on there so I hit it with 1000,1500,2000 and buff... its coming along. That clear got very hard very fast... I would have been sorry if I had waited longer. It stays in the 60's in the garage.

check it out...

Re: NEW MEMBER

that's startin to look really good! clear always seems to be harder to atomize than the color- it's just that much thicker. i tend to use more reducer than the instructions call for- lets it go on thinner...less orange peel.

That's looking real good, excellent work on the cut and buff. This is what really separates a good paint job from a great paint job.

Thanks. I have much experience with cutting and buffing (wish I didnt), one day I'll be able to spray it on like glass, but that day ain't today.

This shot shows how the color the Summit paint matches the door jambs. Incredible luck on my part...its almost 100%

Yep, saw that one. I might be wrong but I don't think he stripped his to the metal. That and the dissassembly took the most time... 100 hours so far, a little over a month in my spare time after work and weekends

Got a few items bolted on tonight and more buffing. Roof section is the only section left to buff, but too tired to tackle it tonight. Excuse the filthy windows. Oh! got my stripes and door decals ordered so this thing will look factory fresh.

It helps by taping off certain areas, and by using less compound.

Its IS very messy, I try to clean the car as I go. Also, this time I really concentrated on starting the buffer extremely slow and getting the compound worked around before I raise the RPMs. Sometimes if I have them availalable I will lay old (but clean) sheets over areas where I have finished so they dont get splatter all over them.

This one hasnt been bad at all.

Re: NEW MEMBER

Getting it all back together now, painting the headlight pockets, hood louvers, "grille" (satin black). And lower front valence (red) today (on the car). Got my doors and windows all back together with new window sweeps... car is all buffed out and I am waiting on my IROC decals and striping (black/gray)...should be here any day.

Getting it done none too soon as we are heading into a cold snap very soon!!
