Door replacement

So my door has been banged up beyond repair (thank you elderly drivers) and I know the scrap yard near me has a few third gens in it. My question is what's the best way to remove and install a door? How many bolts are holding it on? I hear getting the door to align properly can be tricky, and also read somewhere that you have to take the fender off to do it. Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Door replacement

There are three bolts in the top hinge that are accessible from "outside" the car (bolt threads through the hinge into the body).

There are three bolts in the bottom hinge, the front most is accessible from "outside" the car the other two go from the inside out to the hinge (accessible from inside the car, bolts thread into the hinge).

I have never tried it but I think you can get at all of the "outside" bolts with the fender on if you remove the inner fender. They are very easy with the fender off. Bring an offset ratcheting wrench for the outside bolts (but maybe break them free with an offset box end first), you will need a socket for the inside ones. Sorry cannot remember the exact bolt size (14 or 15 mm I think).

There is not a lot of adjustment in the doors. On mine we had to use a couple of body shims (to hinge) and make a full hinge shim for the bottom to make them perfect, but they fit OK just off the shelf (92 doors on an 82 Z28).
