theft proofing an non-passkey thirdgen
My '87 was stolen the other night and I got it back in pretty godd shape all things considered. If I decide to keep it what (if anything) can be done to prevent this from happening again? They busted the steering column open.

I've seen alot of cars used a steel collar that goes around the column. But no idea where to buy it. That'll stop the casual thief.

Don't know if you have an alarm system or not, but that'll pretty much only deter the casual thief anyways. You might want to consider some "kill" switches that are hidden and undetectable, namely the starter, fuel pump, etc. You might also consider disabling your car each night, too, by removing a key item, other than maybe a coil wire, as some thieves are prepared for that. I'm no expert in this field, just a couple of suggestions...

Is the passkey any good anyway? Just wondering...
I had a alpine alarm with my when I bought it...it didnt come with the transmitters. When I tore it down I found a very very cool hidden microphone that could have never been found, maybe find one with one of those, even if the thief can bypass most stuff, he still has to make noise.

VATS (Passkey) saved my 89 IROC once. But I live in a small city. The pro thiefs can get around VATS fairly quickly. There are a number of things you can do to as alternatives to VATS aside from just an alarm:
1) Fuel cut-off switch. Switch hidden under seat, dash, or in console that disables fuel pump.
2) ECM cut-off switch. Same idea.
3) Ignition/Starter switch.
Of the 3, I'll probably do the ECM switch I feel safe about doing it without using any kind of relay and it's the closest to work with.

you want to know a real trick thieft deterant?...you'll loose the cig lighter though. you disconnect the grounding wire to the lighter and run your ignition wire from under the dash to the cig lighter and then it will not start untill the lighter is replaced in the socket. cool huh?. how it works...the lighter itself becomes the conductor to complete the circuit. with it gone the circuit is open and the coil cannot get the "run" juice.

If you want to get really tricky with the whole disabling thing.... get a few 5 switch Dip Switch blocks and set up a combo to disable a few key things and mount them in an easy spot for you... then all you have to do is flip one or two on each block to disable the thing...
Most people hate dip switches (or would never expect them) so if they even find it, they'll more than likely be running out of ideas rather quickly as to which switches to throw or not to throw
It works pretty effectively since they're easy to wire up and they're small enough to hide anywhere
Also good for ignitions

Whenever I want to protect my car from theft, I just remove the ecm fuse and take it with me. Most thiefs will not take it if it cannot run.

the club is a great idea.
directions: You see theft looking at your car with a hammer.
No worry, you have the club.
You sneak up behind him and club him over the head! Drug rehab reject!
On a serious note, definatly get a couple starter kill switchs. A real easy one is putting a wire inline with the ecm and trans position. That way the car won't start because it doesn't know if it's in gear. That's the easiest I can think of. You can also make it so the key only works when the sig lighter is pushed in. There are lots of little things you can do but you need to do them NOW before it happens again.

the coolest thing i found is what i bought mine with. its a grant steering wheel that you take off with a key. When ever i park the car i take it off. you look like an idiot carrying around a steering wheel but your car should be there when you get back. its hard to drive with out the steering wheel.

I think My story is the best one out there... Well My car is a 84 T/A and the lil button on the shifter likes to pop out sometimes. Well i go to the local shopping mall one day and go buy some things and come out and my window is busted and car was hotwired but they couldnt take my cat cuz they couldnt get it in gear cuz they lil button poped out and was laying under the seat. If he would have looked around a lil and found it then i wouldnt have a car. So now every where i go i take the lil button wit me and it fits in your pocket so people wont look at u crazy. Also some professional thieves might know that they put there finger inside and push the lil lever down but what professional thief wants to steal a old thirdgen anyway, they will be out getting the new ones

it takes about a minute to cut through a steering wheel to remove a club.i would install a key tvpe mechanical gas cutoff in the floor in the line from the tank.they would have to bypass it to start the car
