New wing form my 1989 GTA

ok, so the original foam wing on my 1989 needs to be replaced, its looking really bad and I have already tried to fix it several times; but the foam material is really bad and hard (impossible) to repair. I considered the option of replacing the wing with a new one, but the cost is too high @$400 just for the wing and it will need to be primed and painted adding to the cost.

I was looking online for lower cost alternatives and I found this wing on ebay which looks nice and its a low profile/adjustable wing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hummer-Jeep-...86adae&vxp=mtr

Here are pictures of my car: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/album.php?albumid=6812

I don't know if anybody has tried this wing or something similar and is willing to share pictures here.

Thanks!

Re: New wing form my 1989 GTA

Don't put that crap on your car. A cracked spoiler is better than one from fast and furious.

If I didn't have the money to fix it, I would leave it alone until I could afford to do it right.

Also, the wing is universal, which means it universally doesn't fit anything. In that case, you would have to drill new holes, thus leaving the old ones. Now (if you don't want unsightly holes and a deck lid full of water) you have to get the old holes filled and the deck lid would have to be painted.

Yes, I know I will have to drill new holes, fill the old ones and paint the deck lid. I can do that. The problem with the old wing is not only the cracks, the paint and the warping of the wing but also the rust caused by the metal pins that attach the wing to the glass fame and the rust coming from the bottom of the wing. I think the foam wing is built around a metal skeleton that has rusted over time. So when it rains the wing drips rust around the car.

I personally like the wing thats why I like to see pictures of other people that have install similar wings on their firebirds.

Another option I am contemplating is removing the wing all together and install a third brake light behind the hatch glass.

Just out of curiosity, how much do you think a quality restoration part such as a large fiberglass spoiler should cost?

Re: New wing form my 1989 GTA

For the love of God DO NOT put that wing on your car or any car for that matter. The spolier on my TA is in bad shape, but guess what? I'm leaving it till I can replace it with the nice repop part and paint the car. If your going to have to fill holes and paint the hatch to install the ebay wing then why not get the right spoiler and have it painted and just use the holes that are in the car now? It's your car and money, but don't think that your car is going to look good with that wing.

Re: New wing form my 1989 GTA

I dont see anything wrong with putting that spolier on your car. I don't think its any different than people pulling out a stock motor and trying to fit something else in from a 60's big block to a truck diesel. I don't understand other 3rd gen owners pulling out heaters, A/C units, overflow and washer tanks, installing 4th gen dashes and interiors and all of the other things that are done to street driven cars. (I do understand it being done ro a race car) And while I personally prefer the stock look, performance, options, etc, it's still your car. If you like the way it looks, do it. As I said, I don't understand but I'll defend anyone's right to do do their car as they so desire.
The rest of us don't have to live with it....you do.

A 4th gen wing costs less than that r!cer wing & will look way better.

You could put a 91-92 camaro spoiler on there. It looks better on a T/A IMO anyway, usually can find a whole hatch for 200 or less. There are cheap versions of the spoiler available on eBay as well. Looks great on a white T/A, kind of like the 69 T/As.

People are free to do whatever they want with their cars, but I ABSOFREAKINLUTELY HATE THE CROSS BREEDING BETWEEN THE TWO F-TWINS!!! You have no idea how much it pisses me off when people come up to me and say, "I love your Camaro!"

****, this ain't a got-damn Camaro!!!

I guess you've never seen the 1st gen 'bird with the F40 wing. The Firebird had the style first & the Camaro is the one that borrowed it. So blame the Camaro for borrowing the Trans Am wing.

OscarGTA89, save up and get the glass replacement from HAWKS. i did and its worth it. fit was nice and its ALOT easier on the struts.

my friend that helped me mount mine was very impressed with its quality and hes critical.

This is the best advice. I do not like the 4th gen spoilers on a 3rd gen at all and that 91/92 Z28 spoiler does look better on the TA then on the Camaro, but I'm not a fan of that spoiler anyways. If I had a 91/92 Z I would leave it on, but not going to add it to one of my car's

Here is a cheap idea and will still look nice. Get a base Firebird spoiler-the TA had them before 86. Simple and cheap. You will still have to paint the spoiler and fill holes.

Re: New wing form my 1989 GTA

I replaced my Hawk's repro wing with an OE 4th gen wing & haven't regretted it for an instant. I think that the stock wing (& Hawks repro) look too small on our cars. I like how the 4th gen wing end lined up with the rear edge of the rear bumper. It looks more like how the Mechum wing fit in regards to lining up.

It's your car-I just don't like the 4th gen spoiler is all. I like the stock wrape around and I like the stock spoiler on my RS-both nice. low and simple.

Another benefit to the stock style aero wing... They actually work. Bonneville guys run the stock wing above 250-300mph! Both Banks and Lingenfelter broke records using them.

I used the .093 thick sample. $10 includes shipping and neoprene won't rot.

I like it. I will use that, are you happy with the .093 thickness and did you get the adhesive backing?

Here, you can see the .093 under my 4th Gen Wing. I did not get the adhesive backing. I used 3M weatherstrip glue to attach to wing only - dry to deck lid.

I'm thinking that the OP has lost interest in this discussion. No comment since 1-13. I'd like to know which way he went.

Re: New wing form my 1989 GTA

ok, I heard the advice so this is what I did, and I am glad I did it: I repainted the old wing using a can of white "Plati Dip" spray paint. I used about 6 coats which helped fixed many of the irregularities on the surface of the wing. I let the wing dry for about 5 days and then I gave it two coats using Dupli-Color, Perfect match in white BGM0338 (the exact match for my GTA). I let it dry for a day and then I used white silicone around the wing to seal it against the glass and metal surface of the car in an effort to prevent water from getting inside any of the gaps.
I am very happy how it looks. The paint hardened really well. Of course it is not 100% perfect as a new wing but it will do for now.
Thanks for the advice. My GTA remains original. I will post pictures later.

Sounds interesting. I don't think that I've heard of anyone painting over Plastidip. Any concerns about the durability? How about some pictures?
