Purchasing a thirdgen, got Q's

I am going to be purchasing a 1988 Firebird, 89k miles, V8 305 5.0L, automatic tranny, Black exterior with red velour interior, its been garaged and not abused. Im paying $2,100 for it and i think this is reasonable.

What kind of mods would be the best to do on this car to start it off? and do you guys think that price is reasonable? its in real good condition

The 305 isnt a powerhouse engine, but it is very reliable and get good milage. You didn't say if it was Throttle Body or Tune Port, since most are TBI I'll go with it.

First mod would be getting a Open Element Air Cleaner, something like a non drop 14x3 K&N, easy to install with the instructions in teh tech articles. About 25-70 depending on what you get.

Then a cat back exhaust system (about 250)and maybe some headers & Y pipe by Edelbrock or Hooker (around 350-400)

Some good tires and that'll be enough for you to scoot around in. For more in-depth stuff, browse the TBI message section or TPI if that's what you have.

First do a full tune up Change all the fluids and check out the suspension etc. Once it's in "perfect" shape mechanically, I'd start with looking into bringing the car up to speed as much as possible with some goodies that some premium thirdgens had factory. Like get your transmission flushed&filled&filter change and have them put in a 3-4 upshift valve from GMPP and maybe a vette servo etc. You'll want to take advantage of tuning before you start doing mods - although cheap headers to start are rarely a bad idea - so if you plan to own the car awhile you can get into the prom burning scene for around $200. Just browse these boards and check out the tech articles and you'll find tons of info whether it's tbi or tpi. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I believe it is TBI.

I cant wait until i get this car! I'm arranging to meet the owners to exchange money for the car.

Where do you find the K&N filters online, the auto store near us has a limited selection of K&N filters. Or if you could tell me what part # for the K&n i'd need for the car. 5.0L, 305 v8.

I bought a Mr. Gasket 9" air cleaner from Autozone. tossed the element that came with it and had A Z order a 9" x 3" K & N element.$15 for the air cleaner and $32 for the K & N. The 3" lets you get rid of the spacer under the stock air cleaner. It really helped both sound and response. Then I got a 2 1/2" catback Dynomax system w/ a Dynomax super turbo muffler. Used Trans Am tail pipes. About $100 for the whole exhaust. I know all the Flowmaster guys will argue with the choice of muffler but it fit my needs perfectly. Enjoy your car.
