insulation needed on hoods?
insulation needed on hoods?
i was going to "dremel out" my holes in my blister packs on my hood and was wondering if i needed to put insulation back up after ripping it off? Someone told me the paint would peel without out it from heat, but the sun beats down on it and no peeling? Is the insulation really needed?

Working around the paint and body business I can't tell you how many times we have seen the results of no hood blanket.
There are many that claim they have removed them with no damage. And I don't doubt that, but should you take that chance?
Most times they are removed because they are dirty, hanging down, ugly, and get junk on your engine and hair when you work on your car.
IMHO nothing looks better than a brand new hood blanket. They are cheap enough. It gives your car a "well cared for" appearance and adds to the detailing of the engine bay.

Hood blankets are there mainly to cut down on engine noise. If you take it off, you'll immediately see what I mean. You shouldn't have a problem with your paint unless you have a severe overheating problem, and then the paint will probably be the least of your problems. Some cars, like my '68 Hurst/Olds, actually had the hood insulation deleted by the factory with no adverse affect.
The underside of most hoods are pretty ugly though, and a nice hood blanket can really help in that department. One thing I've seen on lots of modified musclecars and tri-fives that looks real cool is a mylar(I think) covered insulation blanket. They have a nice chrome foil type look. Not sure who sells them, but someone here probably does. You could always cut holes around where you are opening up your blisters and sew some trim around the edges.

I have the one from dynomat and love it. It looks ten times better than the original and keeps my hood much cooler. I actually get compliments on my hoodliner who would have thought. just my 2 cents. Jered 1983SS
