mother fuc'n beotch GM T-Tops

I can stand them, then see to get worse and worse. Ok first I put vasoline on the T-Top seals them selfs then re gluded them and filled the space between the body and the seal with Blakc Silcone, there is no f'n way water can get i there. SO what dose it do, well from what I can tell it comes at the t-Top ba thing. I sealed up the back of it but no the front and now it leakes theregoes along the from and down a hole in the frame the surronds the windsheild, thank god I took out my headliner last week.. Why couldn't a multi-million dollar company find a way to keep them from leaking even tho they had 10-20 years experiance with them. dumb ****s.

Those plates are glued down--almost impossible to get off w/o distorting them.
i tried to get off my old one(was perfect)from my Formula--when I finally got it off I gave it away--got totally twisted from the glue.

There are 4 more screws, besides the 6 on the outside, under the weatherstripping holding that black center piece in on the t-tops.

I know the feeling with this F***** up t-tops. Ive replaced all the damn weather stripping and sealed the hell out of it, but it always leakes and does get worse. Is there any way to fix the damn problem?

Just kidding, but seriously, sell it and get a hardtop or do something.

I think the biggest culprit is the center piece. From the factory it wasn't applied very well for sealing. When I finally get around to doing mine, I am goint to apply Dymonic sealer to the center piece in large quantities (Dymonic is a very pliable weather caulcking used on aluminum doors).

I've noticed the center section is made of 2 seperate pieces, there is a ridge between the two (which seems to be the part that rusts on all t-tops). I'm not sure how these are atttached to each other. Questionable logic seems to say if the ridge between the 2 were caulked/sealed, then water could not get in there. If the 2 parts are merely glued together, then buttloads of caulk to reseal them would seem to be the route to seal them together.

If you have new seals & they leak around the top to cowl/b-pillar part then your tops probably aren't drawing down tight enough.

The unfortunate is that your so called ricers have a much better design (because americans settle for good enough). Some of the '*****' tops I've sen implement a gutter system, with the seals just being there for the purpose of sealing out wind, and the gutter system having drains as well.

As proud of our cars as most of us are (and have a right to be), the reality is, is that they are dated, even at the time they were made and there were better engineers out there (in the world,,, since GM isn't the center of the universe) that had bettter ideas & designs. Maybe that's why alot of people must bastardize foriegn cars, they're just pissed to admit in some design aspects, they are better than our alimighty GM sleds.

Well,, that was long winded & boring enough huh ? But, that's just my (rambling) opinion,, I could be wrong. I'll shut up now

I just replaced my ttop stripping on the 4th , the center cection is one piece there are ten screws that hold it in ,, the key to getting them not to leak is making sure you clean all the rails of anyleft over rubber from the seals and get as much of the glue off them .. I cleaned all the glue and any remains of the stripping ,, had a good rain storm last night dry as bone

From what i've heard about the t-tops now is that if the car has even been tapped for an accident or hitting a curb that the alignment on them screws up. A person who works with them told me that. So they are really crap.

Sealing t-tops

I just bought a 91 RS with t-tops. The previous owner mentioned that there was a product specifically made for sealing t-tops (kinda like armour-all, I guess). Anyone know what this might be? I see that people use vaseline.

Thanks!

my t-tops leaked alittle bit at first and then lossened up and leaked a bunch, but now dry as a bone even after hours and hours of pouring rain. it only took a couple of dollars and a few hours total over a couple of weeks (when the rain came)

I have posted how i fixed them on other threads, but basically you need to find exactly where the water comes in and work from there.

i would run a search to find the info u need.

so the moral of the story, some t-tops leak and some dont. The ones that dont the people know what they are doing or they are lucky. The ones that do, can be fixed, just takes time and not alot of money..
