Is there a light in the auto shifter console?

OK, another stupid question. I haven't picked up a manual yet for the car (I will though).

Is there a light in the auto shift console, where the gears are displayed?

Well, I have a 91 Camaro RS..and if they're anything alike, then no. My auto shifter display is just a cheap plastic thing with the gears cut out of the plastic, and a red piece below that shows through. Mine is out of alignment too...when I'm in Overdrive, it tells me I'm 1/2 way between Overdrive and Drive.

Yes there is take off the console and it might have not been put back in when a previous owner had that console off. Or the bulb might be out. It twist fits into the bottom of the console and comes on when you turn on the headlights.

Nixon, you might be able to fix your gear alignment display by taking off the plastic cover. My '91 RS was doing the same thing from an overly-excited downshift. I was able to fix it just by opening the console and re-aligning it.

You would think it would be easy. WRONG. GM decided to use a yellow plastic strip, with the orange square painted onto it, making it impossible to change the color of the gear indicator (unless your car came with white numbers on the dial, then you probably have a white strip). I made a sweet little system, and if it continues to work for a few more weeks, I'll post plans on how to make it. Basically, I took some electroluminescent tape (EL), stuck it over the yellow plastic strip, and covered the majority of it with purple overlay tape (matches my car), and left the gear indicator uncovered. I took some digital pics of it today, and will post them as soon as I can. It looks awsome at night. I am actually thinking about manufacturing these and selling them as a kit, along with another item that I cant mention at this moment....

i dunno about some of the stuff i read but..
#1, i painted over the red tab with just blue model paint
#2, i think they all have a bulb
today i took apart that area of my interior to search for stereo rattle, and i noticed that when i took the top piece of plastic out, it has that white housing. i took that off and seen more goodies, i took everything right apart and i even took out the piece of plastic that shows ya what gear your in and i was thinking about going down town tomorow and getting a white inlay made for that, even maybe with a new font? opinions are appreciated

Guys, I'd really like to believe I have a light for the auto shifter on my 91 Bird, but I still haven't found it. I have discovered something strange however. From the rear view mirror, by the reading lamps there is a little slot towards the center and at night, when I turn on my lights, this little slot lights up and projects down onto my console; enough to see everything. Sometimes it comes on and sometimes it doesn't. Any ideas what it could be. I don't think it's aftermarket.

in my 86 TA, i dont have an indicator plastic thingy that shows what gear i am in....how odd....i have to count down to which gear i want to be in, and click how many times to get there. Its not all that hard, i got used to it over the years, but i am suprized that TA's dont have that plastic thing to tell you what gear you are in that goes over each gear.

Are there any clips when I take the console off, or do I just unscrew it and it'll come off?

Unscrew it and it comes off. You'll have to take off your shifter handle though. If you have the factory one it should come off by removing a metal clip in the front.

From 1982-1988 or 89 the Camaro didnt have a gear indicator. In 89 or 90 they redesigned the shift pattern marker with an indicator.
From 1982-1989 the Firebird didnt have a shift indicator, again only the PRN1234 with backlighting. In 1990 they added a lighted indicator. All thirdgens have a backlight shift pattern. Most of the time the lights burned out or not plugged into the shift pattern housing.

The light in the bottom of the rear view mirror is standard at lest from 91-up on the firebird. The camaro's use the light under the center vents for the same purpose. Also some 1990-92 Firebirds use a light in the bottom of the accessory switch panel for the ashtray.

I don't quite understand what everyone is asking here. In my '86 I have a light in the shift console but no indicator as to what gear I am in. Since my shift lever is lined up with the gear that I am in I assumed that was how it goes. Should there be some kid of indicator in '86 or not?

drew it was 82-87 for the camaros.
My '88 had it, but the "gear indicator" would never be aligned right, so I just cut it off. The 82-87 shifter console area even looks different. don't know about the birds though, I don't have one.

oh yeah, the pre 87's didn't have a "indicator" just a thing that shows the gears , but not which one you are in.
