Slam hatch to button release hatch, no prob

To all of those that said this could not be done, here is what i did. I wanted to switch my regular old slam hatch to one where i could press the hatch release button and it would pop, but i didn't want the problems usually associated with a pulldown motor. I scavenged a pulldown motor from an 86 trans am, and after a while of tinkering, i found myself with a release solenoid. Looking on the hatch release bracket from the 82 trans am, I noticed that there were very similar mount points to those that i found on the pulldown bracket. so, to make a long story short, after i broke off a tab, the solenoid bolted right up to the bracket. Im not sure if the hatch release was ever offered on the 82, but these parts are completely compatible. I removed the cable that operated the lock cylinder on the pulldown motor and ran one hot wire up front to a button in the dash. I couldnt have imagined this being any easier. I've been kicking myself for not noticing this earlier. If anyone wants to know more about doing this, just ask

Here's what I can add. The solenoid release and pull-down assy are two separate items. In fact the convertibles have the pull-down assy, but lack the solenoid. I added the solenoid as well as the associated relay, wiring & switch to mine. Since mine is a convertible I didn't want the trunk release button visible. I got a trunk release button from a wrecked 80's Caprice and mounted it in the center storage compartment. Much happier now. 8^)

Do you have a hatch trim panel on the car? If so what did you use? My stock one can't cover the solenoid. Any idea if the electric cover will work?
