ZL1 vs Cowl hood

I'm debating on putting either a ZL1 style hood, or a 4"+ cowl hood on my 89 camaro RS, just wondering how many people on here have that hood, and what their opinions are on that hood.

Re: ZL1 vs Cowl hood

My buddy had a 4" Cowl Hood and he loved it. I personally was not a big fan made it a bit difficult to see for him at times too he was kind of short, but it all comes down to personal preference. Im going to go with the ZL1 Hood in the future.

Re: ZL1 vs Cowl hood

Unless your car runs 9's, I think a 4" cowl hood is way overkill. I love how the ZL1 hood looks

Re: ZL1 vs Cowl hood

Cowl hoods should only be there is when when you have clearance issues, like a big carb and intake.

A 4" cowl will make driving a pain, you will curb that right front a couple times before you get use to it.

I don't care for the look of a typical cowl hood on 3rd gens. Doesn't follow the lines of the car.

Sunoco hood is a better choice. Or the classic IROC hood.

Just MHO.

Re: ZL1 vs Cowl hood

I wouldn't put a 4"+ on mine. I've never really cared for big cowls like that. I think a ZL1 style hood would look pretty sick though! I've never seen a third gen with a hood like the ZL1, does anyone have a picture of one that looks similar or has one?

When you say ZL1 style hood, do you mean like the L98 hoods?

Yeah where are you finding a ZL1 hood? Just the GM carbon inserts are over $2k... Could imagine that being a very spendy hood to "make". Don't get me wrong I would love to see that, or even own that.

I figured he was talking about an as style hood, since that seems to be the most common hood other then cowl induction hoods.

$2k?! Are you serious?!!! Holy crap.
But I would be awesome to see one on a third gen!

Re: ZL1 vs Cowl hood

If you're under 6' tall, a 4" cowl might not be for you. I've yet to hit any curbs, and can see out just fine. Sorry - I doubt my car will run 9's...

And remember, cowl hoods do suit a purpose aside from looks. They do draw cool air in. The Sunoco hoods I personally like too, and I would have one on now if they made a 4" version.

That being said, I would have opted for a 3" cowl if I could fit everything in there...but just for looks...not that a 1" taller cowl hood will spell doom. Cowl hoods are tried and true, and were available from the factory on some other models.

But -If you want to stand out, get a ZL1 hood or some other designer hood....IMO 2K is a "designer" price. But a few of them are actually semi-functional. It's all personal choice.

Looks like Harwoods "Pro touring" hood.

Doesn't fit the body lines, IMHO.

Definatly not as common.

May be able to make it functional too.

By functional I mean, making it so that it actually directs air into the engine. Like a hood scoop is supposed to do. Not just look cool like most of them do.

How about a ZL1 engine with a factory flat hood? This would look the best.

im pretty sure it is functional, i know its not solid and that it actually has a hole in it to direct airflow to the motor

Re: ZL1 vs Cowl hood

It has a hole in it, and lets air into the engine compartment, but it does not direct air into the engine, which is not nessecarily a good thing.

You would have to build an air box of some sort to make it trually functionall by forcing air into the engine.

That's not a bad looking hood at all. I like it better than the SS hood. As far as functionality..if it's open in the rear and front, it might pull some hot air away from the engine compartment. But even if it isn't functional, it's not that big of a deal so long as you like it.

After all, how many factory hoods on other cars come with scoops etc. that are not functional and just for looks?...a lot. The price is kinda reasonable on that hood too...on par with a cowl or simular in price. I think if you paint it, it'll blend in well and look sweet. Get it!!

Re: ZL1 vs Cowl hood

I always liked the look of a cowl hood, but it had to be a specific type that followed the lines of the car well. I went with a 2.5" because of clearance issues with my airgap intake. Didn't need any more than that, so that's all I bought. 4" hoods look nice, though.

Re: ZL1 vs Cowl hood

I like a nice simple 2" - 3" cowl hood (i.e. like the one I bought). To be honest, I think these cars look best with the stock Z28 hood, but a cowl hood can help with underhood temps and shaves a bunch of weight off the front of the car, so they have their advantages.

Haha..I added weight to the front of my car...I have a steel 4" cowl, and it's a bunch heavier than the stock composite hood was. I only have the 4" cowl because I NEED it with this blower...the wing nut dented the inner panel on the cowl as it is!!

If I were running N/A, I'd opt for the 2.5-3" cowl...

Oh ok. Matte black looks way better to me and not as many people use it. The only bad this is I was told it's harder to keep clean, but if you wash your car a lot then that wouldn't be a problem.

Harwood only makes fiberglass hoods.

I'd be willing to bet hawks hood is made by harwood.
