Turning back odometer (Not what ya think...)

I needed to replace the instrument cluster in my 92 RS. However, the used cluster I purchased shows 116,000 miles on it when I only have 83,000 miles on the car. I would like to roll it back to what I really have on the car, but I hear this isn't as easy as it looks. Any help is appreciated!

Its not as hard as its just a PITA and time consuming tedious work. Basically when you get it all torn down you've got a pin with the numbers, and a pin with gears. All are driven with a small electric motor. You can tear it down and turn the motor by hand (which takes so long you can barely see the wheels turn) or you can turn it with a power drill (which goes a little faster) or you can bend the assembly open, slide the gears free from the number rollers and then line em up to what you want and put the gears back on. Unless you have tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny accurate little fingers and patience out the wazooo I wouldn't recommend ****ing with it. Worst case scenario the odometer never works again.

I done it when I changed my instrument cluster. I just took the whole thing apart. I took the gears and all out. It didn't take too long, but I did end up breaking off a piece of the plastic on the back. I glued the piece back on and everything worked fine. Just be careful, pay attention to how everything goes together, and you should be ok.

Axle/Gears: 3.45/3.42 (soon 4.10)
Do what I did. Disassemble both speedos and take the existing cluster odometer roll thingy and swap it. Should have the same gear. I did it when I upgraded from the 85 to the 145 MPH speedo in my '86 ROC. Worked fine so far, 20k miles later!

i did it in bird, its a PITA. i ended up pulling the assembly apart slighty, each gear has big and small teeth on it. after the first number rolls around, the big tooth catchs the next one, and rolls it over, and so on and so on. they have to be lined up excatly right for all the zero's to be straight. what kept happening ot me is i would get the 0's lined up, but it wouldnt be lined up in the window correctly. well after about a half an hour of messing with it, i finall figured it out and got lucky and it worked. my car is still sitting with 0000000 on it, waiting to be finished. make sure that when you spread the metal apart, you dont bend it to much, cause if you do, its hard to get everything to stay back together. hope this helps. lil jay

Grab a power drill and go foward till it lapses over.. you might be their a lil while though...
