Top Problems Help!

My 91' vert has a new problem, the hatch that covers the top when it is down won't close. The solenoids just keep on popping, it doesn't even stop when the car is in gear ( the is safety lock that is supposed to keep this from happening ). It gets worse, as soon as I popped the swith out of the console ( wiring still attached )the problem magically disappeared. I am now too scared to drive with the top down ( for fear of having that hatch become an airbrake!! ), has anyone had this problem, any ideas on how to fix it?
