88+ digital dash question

i was checking out some web page and it had a pic of a GTA with a digital dash. It had all kinds of stuff going on right next to the guage cluster (above the audio console). What is all that stuff and does anybody have a good pic of it?

It's an information panel. It usually displays the milage and says "PONTIAC", but on the milage section you can toggle through a bunch of other crap like trip meters etc, and on the section that says PONTIAC, it gives all sorts of status indications, like a door open, low coolant, low bluepiss, even disconnected or burned out bulbs. (That one amazed me! I unplugged a headlight and the status display indicated "Left head lamp" or something like that. I was mucho impressed.

If you are refering to the "square" LED display it is the odometer. It also has a trip odometer, English/metric conv. button and an average speed display.

I wonder how that's wired up... Think it'd fit in a Camaro? I'm not sure how that would look though; might be "out of place."

I'm researching the same thing. I want that dash in my IROC. The wiring to the dash should be the same, but if you get a dash, make sure it comes with all of its own wiring because that's unique. What I'm working on finding out now is whether the display drivers are on a chip or if it's all gate logic. I want to be able to change the milage to reflect my IROC's actual milage, plus I want it to display "CAMARO" instead of "PONTIAC". I'm sure I can modify it either way, and the CAMARO thing would be easy, but the milage would require a fairly complex math circuit to recognize the input of the milage (as opposed to trip meter, etc) and be able to subtract/add a specific amount and then feed that new number to the display.

i only wish it had avg gas mileage in there. my roomate's Grand Prix has that and it is sweet. But still considering my car is an 87 and has that type of technology in it, it is pretty bad a$$

I have an '87 T/A with the whole digital dash. The odometer has a funny problem. After about five minutes or so of having the car on, the odometer blacks out. I believe it has a heat sensor of some sort that keeps it from frying itself(many electronic parts do). Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what did they do about it? Also the odometer reads 116,000 miles but actually has more like 160,000 miles because it stops counting when it blacks out.

If you want to get it real techincal. You can use a LCD display. Something similar to what people put on their computer cases. Just need some sort of translation software to read what the computer on the car is doing, and have it display practical information in an organized format on the LCD. I have seen some pretty sweet stuff with the computer LCD's.

I've been thinking about this for a while, because if I do that, I can have a switched input, so when I want to I can have TV on, and when I want I can have it display stock information.

I know the Buick Riviera from 86-89 had a Touch screen display for everything and more. It actually was a monitor tube and I think it was about 8" daig. might be interesting to try and retro one into a cam or bird.

The biggest downer is it was green monochormatic, if it was amber it would be really sweet in a Pontiac.

i think the Olds Toronado had the same thing some where through there too from 86-89.

I might be wrong, but if I remember right, 87 or 88 was the last year for the DIGITAL gages, its pretty uncommon in salvage yards. after a few hundred cars, only found 1 dig inst panel.

They weren't very rare at all. More GTAs had them than not.

Actully they are very rare. If memory serves, they were only made for 88 GTA's, and it was an option, not standard. They were then discontuined along with the notchback.

They had the dashes since 86.
In 87, there were 5352 cars with the digital dash, presumably most of them were GTAs. There were 9481 GTA's made in 87, so that's better than 50%
In 88 there were 5102 GTAs with the dig dash. There were 9765 GTAs.
According to Frankie's page, in 89 there were only 3 cars with a digital dash.

What it boils down to is that between 87 and 88, there were 11,000 digital dashes. Very few were made in 86 and apparently only 3 in 89. Hard to find? Possibly, but with over 11,000 produced, I'd have a hard time calling them "rare".

I don't consider that dash very rare. Your odds of finding a GTA with one are better than 50%.
