Rust converters (POR-15, etc.)

What is the difference between POR-15 and Permatex Extend? Are all rust converters the same chemically? I ask because quite a few posters to this board rave about POR-15, but none of the local parts stores carry it.

Sorry, I don't know the difference, but Por-15 dries to a "ceramic" like finish and I swear by it. I've used it years ago as a primer for some exterior parts and no rust yet. www.por-15.com

POR-15 is not a rust converter. It is a coating that is used to lock moisture and oxygen away from the metal, thereby totally stopping the oxidizing process (rusting). Paint softens when exposed to water, whereas POR-15 hardens when exposed to water. The reason that you don't see POR-15 in stores is that it is an industrial chemical mainly used in the shipping industry (ocean going freighters, etc.), and the automotive restoration industry is kind of a side line. One of my friends is a distributer for POR-15, and most of his $$$ sales are 55 gallon drums sent to different shipping fleets.

In my experience of restoring various musclecars, POR-15 far out performs the so called rust converters. I also use it on my construction machinery, and it hasn't failed me yet through years of abusive use.

Many of the best products available to automotive restorers are only available directly from the manufacturer or a distributer. Many times when a product moves to the mass market it quickly disappears because it can't generate the type of sales that the mass retailers demand of a product, and then we can't get it any more, which is our loss. In the retail stores, dollars not quality rule (which doesn't mean retail stores don't have any quality products).
