do you have to have some kind of sweet scanner to do this? And if you print them on regular paper, how does the light shine thru and night? I wanna see some installed pics too. I already have MacEwen's on my car, but I would like to know how for when I upgrade to a different speedo or maybe a different car.

I just used the guages Ray87Z provided and mixed them with some pictures that I already had using Paint Shop Pro. It's really not that hard. I do have a nice SCSI scanner but I don't have the inlays. I plan on junkyard hunting pretty soon that way I can find the different speedo and tach gauges everybody needs.

Hey Jim91rs, if you look closely at your console, the light doesnt shine through ur guages, it illuminates around the cluster. And yeah, I would like to see them also.

the light does shine through my macewen overlays though. The reason I am really asking is because I think I want to make some for my brother's 95 ta.

Hey Soulbounder, do you have the pic of the bird off the back of a Firebird? I am trying to find the one between the tail lights, but am having some trouble. Thanks, if you can get it.

This is the only one I have for now. I can change the colors smoothly and perfectly, the only bad thing about that is it takes me a long time. I zoom in about 20 times and pixel match every color.

HybridZ, my macewen guages are a thick vinyl like material, it does not have adhesive backing, just adhesive tape on the corners. I am incredibly impressed with the quality of both macewen and the overlays. I would still like to know how to make my own set so I will try on my bent set of macewen overlays that I have.

Oh ok, thanks for correcting me. But I was referring to the stock guages. I don't think the light shines through the guage, or does it? I had the conception that on the stock guage, the light shines around the instrument cluster, therefore believed that the Macewen ones were the same concept. I would have bought the white face guages but I bought a 5" carbon fiber monster tach for my car. Everything including the lights match my interior so now i kinda regret buying cause i want the overlays now. but who knows, i might change my mind.

To whoever made the white faced gauge with the firebird(screaming chicken) symbol in the middle, that is one kick @ss gauge. I think that you should talk with the McEwen company. Maybe you can try and get them to produce gauges like that with the emblem off of it, and have some kind of group purchase. I think you should try and make a little money off of them. They look great, but I want them made out of the real material, and not printer paper. I need new gauges for my '83 TA, and those gauges are the nicest I have ever seen. I think you should definitely try and get them to produce gauges with the emblem on it, and make a little money for yourself. Dont forget all of your friends here at thirdgen.org...maybe you can get a discount or group purchase off of your design. If not, then I guess I will have to try and make my own. Nice work, You did a better job than the pro's.

Ray,

I was just curious if you ever got the pics of these homemade gauge faces developed. I would really like to see them installed.

Thanks

To all that liked my designs: they were alright as long as you didn't actually need to drive the car. They were not fuctional overlays, just nice to look at. Speedometer and odometer would have affected it. The screaming chicken could be used as is, but not the iroc one. Maybe one I get some free time I'll tinker with the idea again.

Hey, Jer82Z28, It's VTEC, not VTECH. Not that it makes a difference, though, VORTEC is way better anyway.

The oil pressure gauge is on the tach highhat... Is it a seperate gauge on newer cars?

From: pgh,pa,
i just wanted to say thanks for the zip file, i tweaked it a little, and made my speedo go up to 155 and the whole thing only cost me 7.00 for the best glossy paper that kinkos had, and the difference is amazing, thanks, again.

Matt
and does anyone know the easiest way to set the needles? cause my speedo tach and temp gauge are right on, but my oil pressure and fuel gauge are questionable

oh and to anyone who is considering this mod, i definitely say go for it, the results are worth the minmal effort,

Soulbounder....would you happen to have the time to make those white faced overlays with the bird in the center for my '83 TA? I cannot find any place that makes them...and you are my last hope. Could you some how find the whole gauge set up customize them...with the screaming chicken(firebird emblem) in the center...like you previously did. I am highly interested in these...and would greatly appreciate it if you could find the time to do it for me. Thanks.

Gee those files look oddly like the files in my tech article, amazing how you scanned them and made them the same with the Z28 and IROC looking the same the way you colored them. How strange. And I'm not talking bout the white parts, just the TACHS

I have just completed putting homemade white face gauges in my car also. My hat's off to Mike Key, I'm sure the "real" white face guage manufacturers will be pissed at you I did both of my cars, and a few tips I learned doing 2 of them was 1.) A fork (yea, the eating utensil) makes the best guage puller offer I could find 2.) I used sticker paper and actually stuck them to the original guages which looks good because I was able to put all the pegs back inand get a super close trim around the odometer. I got the paper at Wal*Mart and it cost about $8.00 3) On my 82 Z28, since it sees very little street use, I deleted the odometer/trip odometer and it looks very clean. 4.) I couldn't decide if I wanted the needles white or flourescent orange so I left them white in my RS, and painted them Safety Orange (flourescent) in the Z28. Both are good looking and the orange needles match my Auto Meter Sport Comp gauges, which I am currently taking apart to do them in white too, they'll be Phantoms...w/o the price or that big gaulky black ring Auto meter puts around them!!

I should have pics in a day or two.

I just reread some of the previous posts, and noticed that some of you are having the problem I had with the size of the templates. I had to scale each one of them down 33% (again, I used Mike Key's templates, and edited them a little to own liking) to get the right size. I just did it on my printer settings. I don't know why they did that, but nonetheless, they look killer now.
