Access port to take fuel pump out in hatch?

has anyone cut out a section of there floor pan in the hatch area for easy access to the fuel pump?Since I have a parts car here that I'm taking the tpi out of I was thinking about cutting a section of the floor pan out of it that can be pop-riveted back down on a slightly smaller cutout in my RS for easy fuelpump access. How large a piece would I have to cut out to actually access it?

The butcher mechanic where I used to work did that all the time. He would use weatherstrip adhesive to seal the hole up. I think you would have to cut a few holes to get at the fuel pump on a thirdgen. Is the trackbar bracket in the way?

Do it the right way or take it to someone who will!!!

I used to work at a GM dealer and i could do the fuel pumps in third and fourth gen f-body's in about 1-1/2...you'll spend that much time ripping up hte interior and butchering the body>

Unfortunatly, you'd be wasting your time & having to cut and extremely large hole in your floor, comprimising some structural integrity of the floor. The lines from the sender are solid steel that go from the sender to the coupler on the frame rail on the drivers side. The snder is also deep and you have to twist it in a couple funky ways to get the float out, with the steel lines attached, a small hole just isn't going to get it.

2nd, the tank isn't but an inch from the floor so you would have to be pretty dammed careful cutting.

Last time I put a pump in it took the better part of 2 hrs, alot less time than dicking around trying to cut a hole then having to fab up a way to put the piece back in place (in which case you'd have to take the tank out anyways defeating the purpose of the hatch)

Just something to think about
