Advice - New Floor pan, patch/weld?

OK - I am in the process of restoring my 87 Trans Am.
The seats, center console and carpets were a mess, plus I wanted black interior anyway.

With that said, I completely gutted the interior only to find some rust on the floor pan, which I was actually surprised because the car looked pretty sturdy.
I only paid $500 for the car anyway and I want to do it right, so..

ADVICE?

Not too bad, however I would buy a new floorpan and use that to patch it. Floorpan replacement isn't exactly easy, but with a good welder and patience you should be fine. My '85 TA had way worse rust on the floor.

My friend knows how to weld, and he wants to just buy some sheet metal and do it that way. Will that work?

It should. If it were me, before I laid down the welds I would practice on the old piece that you removed in order to dial in the welder. There are plenty of articles in both Hot Rod and Car Craft about floor pan repair, I would read a few before jumping and and slicing out the old metal.

I'd just add seam seal it and make sure no water is coming in from anywhere. (ttops).
